 Budget Eb Clarinet

Hello clarinettos!

I am 'TheClarinetKid' and I live in New Zealand also just turned 13. I play a R13 Buffet Crampon purchased from in Howarths of London back two years ago. I am going to complete my Trinity College ATCL Diploma Examinations at the end of this year. I also other instruments but clarinet is one my three main instruments along with cello and French horn.

I recently got a request from school that I was to play for the mini ensemble for the high school Shakespeare production and they want me to play the Eb clarinet.

I can't really buy a pro-Eb clarinet and all of that but considering a budget eb clarinet. My price range would be around 100~400NZD MAX.

I hear those Selmer Bundy Resonite Eb are good? Not even sure about Eb Clarinets.

Please help,

-TheClarinetKid

Chances are if you get a Bundy Eb for a fairly low price, expect to spend more on having it serviced or fully overhauled depending on its condition and also on a good quality mouthpiece if it doesn't come with one or has one that's damaged.

That's a pretty low budget to get an Eb that's playable - a decent mouthpiece alone could use most of that budget!

If I were you, I'd try very hard to borrow or hire one, rather than spend money on something cheap that will likely be impossible to play in tune. You could even look at transposing the part on to Bb and putting any high passages down an octave.

That said, if you held a gun to my head and told me to get an Eb cheaply, I'd probably go for this:

It will be made in China, and the keys might be a bit on the soft side, but the John Packer instruments I've played on have been surprisingly good for the price (although I've only played their Bb and C clarinets, which could come from a completely different factory...)

Any chance you can get the school to supply the Eb clarinet? Either buy or pay for the rental? It really isn't your responsibility to provide an unusual instrument.

What if they asked you play piano and they didn't have a piano?

I'm inclined to agree - if the school is expecting you to play the instrument they can't demand that you suddenly spend a lot of cash you (or your parents) don't have; Could they arrange some sort of loan of an instrument (possibly an extended approval period would be long enough to cover the time you need the instrument for the show)? Does your teacher have an E flat you could borrow? Or know anyone who does? Alternatively are there any schemes which might help with finance to buy the instrument which either your school or your parents could access - I don't know about the New Zealand system on this but may be such things exist.

Good luck

Vanessa.

If there are any county owned/local education authority owned instruments, then it shouldn't be any trouble for any school to get hold of one for short term use.
