 New mouthpiece?
Author: jrain54

Hello all,

I had a lesson yesterday with a fill-in clarinetist because my normal teacher was away, and she recommended buying a new mouthpiece because the one that comes with the clarinet (the one I'm using) is essentially the plastic that comes with the new phone that you just peel off and throw out...

I have a Buffet model E12 and I'm playing with the same mouthpiece of the model..

Any suggestions as to what mouthpiece I should look into to purchase?

Thanks

Try some Vandoren mouthpiece . There are many opening and facing to select on.

Thank you !!!!!

I would suggest trying a Vandoren M15. It is a very "accessible" mouthpiece that works.

If you're just moving up from the stock mouthpiece, save your money and try one of the really good basic ones first, the Fobes Debut or Behn Overture. Both are ~$35 apiece and play much better than one might expect for their price. In a number of cases, my students have preferred them (and the results they get with them) over more expensive offerings. If you're into spending closer to $100, the Vandoren 5RV is worth checking out, and so is the Rico Reserve X5.

I would wait for my "real" teacher to return, and have this discussion with him/her.

"Any suggestions as to what mouthpiece I should look into to purchase?"

Still more fundamental, let me talk about what factors you should consider, as Ken suggested above you discuss with your regular teacher (and I agree) as it regards WHETHER you should buy a new mouthpiece. People have already given sound suggestions (I think) regarding brand, IF mouthpiece change is indicated.

Your teacher needs to focus on your current skill level, if the mouthpiece your playing on is holding you back, what advancements you might both short and long term derive from switching mouthpieces, and at what cost.

People have written volumes on the bboard about mouthpieces, and there are many attributes that define them. But some of the more primary ones are the length and width of the side rails, the tip opening, and the curvature of the rails.

Some understanding of where your current mouthpiece measures up, and if those attributes might [be] hold[ing] you back needs to be one of the first things addressed.

I agree with Ken. Others here have made some good suggestions and the substitute teacher isn't wrong, but your regular teacher is familiar with your playing over the long haul and may not have dealt with your mouthpiece situation for a variety of reasons. Best of luck!
