How to Transpose Clarinet in C part to Clarinet in Bb
Author: clrntmaestro

Hi,

I was given this Clarinet in C part for Verdi's La Traviata Brindisi.

I have never played a Clarinet in C part before and I wanted to ask how I would transpose it for Clarinet in Bb or Clarinet in A.

The part it self has 2 flats in the key signature (Bb & Eb). And the melody starts on the note F on the second space in the staff.

How do I go by transposing this for my Bb clarinet or A clarinet? Please help explain and also what note would I then start on?

Thank you!

M Lai

I think it is easiest to start by realizing that the pitch of the instrument gives you the note that is sounded when that instrument plays a written 'C.' So that is why when you play a 'C' on paper in comes out a 'Bb.'

That difference is a one whole tone (or two half steps). So to "correct" written music meant to be played at written pitch, you need to move up two half steps (or one whole step) in key (and each note). So written 'C' becomes the key of 'D' for your 'Bb' clarinet.

Just move up one more half step for the 'A' clarinet (which sounds one half step lower than a 'Bb').
