I've tried out the Bari Esprit tenor sax mouthpiece and found it acceptable as a student mouthpiece. No better than a Yamaha 4C, maybe more flexible in tone, but with less QC I would guess. The same would go for the Bb clarinet incarnation I suppose.

But if you do front up another 10 or so dollars for a 4C you may as well just opt for a Hite Premier instead.

There are two versions of the Bari Esprit: one with a matte finish, and one with a shiny finish. I've got the shiny version. Here are my impressions:

The Esprit offers stable pitch, easy articulation, dependable response, and very good control over the entire range of the clarinet. The facing, for me, works well only with Vandoren Traditional and V12 reeds. Resistance is medium-low. It is very difficult to squeak playing the Esprit. Projection is very nice; tone quality tends to be slightly bright and unfocused with a touch of reediness.

The Esprit would be a great choice for use in marching band, for playing outdoors, and for including with inexpensive student clarinets that one is offering for sale. It would be acceptable for someone just starting to play the clarinet, but not the best choice available among inexpensive mouthpieces.

The Esprit is not voiced appropriately for classical clarinet study.

The Esprit is the least expensive mouthpiece that I am aware of that is actually playable.

If you plan to study classical clarinet, save your money till you can afford $35.00 to buy at least a nice acrylic Clark Fobes Debut mouthpiece or a Brad Behn acrylic Overture mouthpiece (made from the same acrylic blank as the Fobes). These are more flexible, better faced, and actually are "voiced appropriately for classical clarinet study." If you want to save up still more--close to $100--you could buy a really good hard rubber Vandoren (5RV, M13, M13 lyre, M15) or a Reserve X5 or X0. Even lots of pros use these, and if you ask a good teacher to help you in the selection process, you can find one that will work very well for you.
