Buffet Bass Clarinet Radio Model

Hi everyone!

I recently acquired a Buffet Crampon Bass Clarinet with the Serial Number: 20701, Radio Model, 1963

I was wondering if you have any more information about that particular model. Also why it was called the Radio Model.

Any pictures, brochures, adds or additional information about this instrument would be amazing.

I am also not sure about the neck situation at my instrument. The angle seems to be very unusual. So any photos of any other Radio Models and their necks, would be fabulous so I can compare.

I think the term 'Radio' was being used at the time (Selmer used 'Radio Improved') as radio had become a popular form of media at the time along with radio bands and orchestras, so riding the wave of this popularity they used it to reflect the era.

Although the same isn't true for the rise of television in the '50s (in the UK). I don't think there's ever been need for the names 'Television Model' or 'Television Improved' as 405 lines didn't exactly offer great definition at the time, unless they made the logos massive and cameras took close-up shots (which they wouldn't have done as there's no advertising on the BBC - they'd have the logos covered with a bit of black tape).

Mr. Francois Kloc said that the Buffet Radio model bass clarinet was designed for The French Radio Orchestra hence the name. Walter Grabner has one as his personal bass clarinet.

I did have a Buffet Radio Model bass clarinet here for awhile. As I remember, it had a very sweet, intense tone quality. A lot of fun to play. Sadly, I sold it to a customer....can't keep them all.
