 Recommended Reed for M13
Author: BGBG
Date:   2015-12-29 05:47

I was wondering what reed someone would recommend for a Lyre 88 M13 mouthpiece if used to playing ,say, a Rico 2.5 and 3 strength reed. I find the 3 better or easier to control in the upper registers. I know nothing about how to match a reed to a mouthpiece so I thought maybe someone would have suggestion on which ones to try.

Vandoren provides recommendations for reeds strengths of their reed productions that generally work with each mouthpiece, but it is still very dependent on your personal physiology and approach to playing.

You can download their guide on the website here:

All the Vandoren reed models, V12, V21, Rue Lepic, and Traditional in strength 3 or 3.5, as well as the Rugotti Gold reeds, also from 3 to 3.5, play well on a Vandoren M13. Rugotti Gold are especially good for students because they usually vibrate well without requiring much adjustment. Try a variety of these for yourself and see which work best for you.

3 Steuer Classic. A perfect fit. Write and I'll send a few free samples. You need good consistent reeds to play well. The M13 is a decent mouthpiece. Until you reach the advanced levels often you can't tell a good reed from a bad reed and in a box of 10 reeds sometimes only 2 or 3 play. The rest are trash.

Most players are getting 7 to 8 Steuer reeds out of a box of 10 to play well, but you have to break them in for 5 days or so.

The GREAT Stanley Drucker went into the Vandoren store in New York City and asked the person there that he wants to meet the guy that puts the 2 good reeds in each box of Vandorens. True story. Dang funny, but I bet he wasn't in a good mood that day.

The M13 Lyre works well with a 3.5-4 V12 reed, some use the blue box.

I've had good results with VD 3s on my m13 but had to go back to Mitchell luries since I was only getting two maybe 3 good ones out of a box of ten. I use
strength 4 on ML and I get more playable or consistent ones out of the box
roughly 8 out of ten.

I play a M13 lyre mpc on a S1 buffet clarinet.
I like the Argentinian Gonzalez reeds PRIMO line strength 3.5 and the Vandoren V12 strength 4.5.
This says nothing abt somebody else's preferences.

A box of Steuer reeds were shipped. You should get about 7 or 8 reeds to play out of the box. They are thick so this should help you with the upper register. Happy new year! My best, bob

A Question for Bob.

How would you place the strength of Steuer reeds compared to D'Addario Reserves 3.5.

Also in the UK, I have come across the Steuer Esser. Is this their top brand?

Would be good to know.

Andrew

Don't play an M13-lyre, just the non-lyre version ... but found that a Legere Signature 2.75-3.00 and a Legere Classic 3.00-3.25 work for me. Also good luck with VD 56s in a 3.50 or 3.50+. With the V12s, have intermittent luck ...

Anxiously waiting on Legere's new premium reed later this year ... wish they were available in 1/8 strengths!

The plain M13 has closer tip and longer lay than the lyre version, so I'd expect a 1/4 strength softer.

I have also thinned the tip rail to about 1/2 of the factory width, which, IMHO makes it articulate better and brightens the sound a bit and maybe makes it play with less resistance.

Vandoren's consistency has really improved over the years ... I think much of the improvement started when they started molding their blanks rather than trying to machine them ... this was before the day of CNC precision machining ...

More people should give the M13-plain a fair shot and allow themselves to find a setup that works for them ... a great MP.

My two cents ...

Tom

Andrez444

Good question. I'll find out for you. Here in the US I'm pushing the Exclusive and Classic reeds. As far as strengths the Exclusive reeds play very close to the V12's and the Classic reeds are about a 1/4 strength lighter.

I've been shipping some reeds, not a lot to England. Mainly the Exclusive reeds. Canada orders more than the US, however a lot of symphony players in the US order the reeds, but the word isn't reaching the advanced students, with a few exceptions such as the players in the Philly Orchestra that teach at Temple University. There's a few other top music schools that order, Eastman is another school. I've shipped as far as Australia. Their military buys reeds now. Russia buys some. There doesn't seem to be a pattern.

Andrez444, send me an email to savagesax@aol.com and I will have an answer for you after the weekend. Bob

Hi Bob, does that offer of free samples apply to others too? Because I'm trying out new reeds and would like to try some.

I use the M13 Lyre with Vandoren blue box strength 4 or V12 4.5.
