 Backing tracks

1. Where can I find a free without clarinet backing track I can download and play along with for Stranger On The Shore?

2. If find one do I look for Bb clarinet, or specify the key the song is in, for example I have a Bb clarinet but sheet music I have is in key of C. I realize with clarinet it will sound different but I am not playing with any other instruments, but the backing track would have to sound like the clarinet I suppose. This is new to me so I didnt know what key to look for, because I get confused with the clarinet sounding lower than the concert pitch note. Dont even really know how to ask the question but I am sure you know what I mean.

For transposing instruments (like the Bb clarinet) it is easiest if you think of the written third space "C" on the staff. This written note will SOUND the pitch of the instrument.

So any music that is written in "C" for a Bb clarinet will be in the actual concert pitch of "Bb."

Someone else may know if there is a "music minus one" version of "Stranger On the Shore." But you may have to live with whatever key THAT version may be in.

The first one isn't free, but it isn't particularly expensive. Why shouldn't the composer, or his estate, benefit from his work?

Take a look at this article. If your backup track is in the wrong key, this may help:

I actually know how to transpose but it would be easier if came in a key that matched clarinet notes I play. I used to transpose to easier key but later realized this was a mistake and caused interference with learning and progress. Too big a hurry to play songs at that time. Havent really studied and understood the meaning of the clarinet E playing a D tone on the tuner, for example. Have to think that through and understand it better. I has always confused me, as I am used to guitar and piano written music. Right now I just want to play along with some backing tracks without the clarinet on the track.

I am sure I can afford one, or even the few I would want but just hoped to find a free one. If not available then buying is no big deal. If they want to sell it I agree they have the right.

I guess you are just describing an instance of what makes the difference confusing.

Interesting story. A friend of mine just told me this afternoon of teaching a spouse to play a simple tune on a clarinet. The spouse being a guitar player. The friend only identified the fingerings by their concert pitch names.

You'd think after two hundred years or so we'd all learn clarinet the same way. I never really understood myself why we have to refer to the notes that are played by any other name than the sounded tone. So what that the fundamental note is a "Bb?" Who cares?

I use a Band in a Box backing track. Probably can make a midi file of that. I haven’t got the sheet music but i play by ear starting on G on my Bb clarinet.
