 Reeds to Pair with M30
Author: Exiawolf

Greetings!

I have a friend who recently picked up a Vandoren M30, and he was curious as to what strength and cut of reed that others (specifically teachers and professionals) find success with. Thanks!

V12 3.0 - 3.5 worked for me. I gravitated away from the M30 specifically cause I remember some sluggishness with tonguing. It was clear enough, sounded fine, just something with rapid staccato articulation wasn't easy to do.

I always use this m30 mpc . My reed is the Vandoren 56 rue lepic
3.5 strength . My teacher told me that it works well with a reed with high strength.

I just switched away from the M30 and what worked for me was Alexander Superial 3.5. V12 are fine and made the M30 a bit more bright but the Superial seem to be a bit more consistent from reed to reed and also a bit thicker. I found the M30 to play with absolutely no edge or brightness at all, which is not "bad" but not what I currently want.

I find traditional Vandoren reeds 3,5 work best. Jon Manasse who helped design the M30 plays a 3,5 blue box on them. I'll also suggest the use of a good metal ligature. My Rovners and string ligature didn't work to well with them. A Vandoren Optimum or Bonade helped with the articulation problem I had with my Rovner on the M30.

I agree Blue Box 3.5 & VD Optimum.

Fernie, I appreciate the info, but how do you know that Mr. Manasse plays Blue Box on it? In everything I've seen of him, he talks about using every type of reed.

I've used Gonzalez FOF 3.5, Canyes Xilema 4 and Legere 3.5.

Vandoren's artist lineup on their web page tells that Manasse plays the M30D mouthpiece and the V12, Rue Lepic 56 and traditional reeds.

I play the M30 with V12 3.5 reeds. The V21s give about the same tone, but Rue Lepic 56 doesn't give me the sound I am looking for.

Exiawolf, there is a video on YouTube with an interview with Jon Manasse where he takes apart his clarinet and holds up his reed. His reed is clearly a traditional blue box reed by Vandoren. He then puts it back on and plays and sounds like the way he sounds. It wouldn't surprise me if he did use different types of reeds. Most players do. I switch between blue box and legere's on my M30.

I mainly use two mouthpieces, m13 lyre and M30 by Vandoren. The Lyre works wonderful with V12 and M30 with Traditional. Legere works well on both but better on the M30. This is just MY experience. I use the M30 for orchestra and the m13 lyre for chamber.
