My friend showed me an old Buffet clarinet of his yesterday which had a wraparound register key. The serial number was scratched out. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know about when they stopped making Buffets with wraparound register keys? The search function suggested maybe late 1910s or early 1920s but I found no definitive answers.

The latest Buffet that I own with a wrap around register key was made in 1922.

I seem to recall somebody saying maybe until around 1940? I saw a pictures of a Buffet with integrated barrel and wraparound register key w/a serial number indicating 1928, so these features we think of as more associated with the 19th century persisted longer than popularly believed.

Ok, thanks for the info. I also thought this clarinet was interesting because there was a ring around the top of the upper joint (like the rings on barrels.)

That extra ring was most likely put there to repair a crack. It was a common repair before carbon fiber banding was invented.

The modern W Schreiber 6025 / 6026 and 6010 Clarinets have the wrap around speaker key. I have the 6010 plastic / Silver plated one. The speaker key is a neat looking feature and has apparently been slightly re-positioned for better intonation according to the write-up. Because the speaker hole is now high up on the side the speaker tube has a bit more of it's length on the outside of the body hence less bore obstruction. (2mm)

Is the Schreiber 6010 the same price as a Buffet B12 considering they're essentially the same clarinet (wraparound speaker key aside)?

Most Oehler system clarinets still have the wraparound key, right? I have an old HP Albert system clarinet with one that I found at an antique shop. They seem to be much less common on Boehm system instruments though.

It's standard on German/Oehler system clarinets and reform Boehms.

Chris. No, I don't know about the cost of a new B12. But yes. the W. Schreiber 6010s is really just a B12 made in Germany. And I don't think they're available new anymore.

“All Müller/Oehler/German system clarinets I know, even older than mid 19th century, have, like the modern Schreiber on Barry Vincent's photo, the speaker key "wrapped around" three quarters only: looked from the mouthpiece side the vent would be at about ten to eleven o'clock. On the other hand, to my knowledge the wrap around speaker key typical for Albert system clarinets (which, btw, sometimes also have "three in a row" keys for R5) is “wrapped around" a full 180 degrees: the vent is at 12 o'clock, in line with the A- key. In addition he pointed out that typically Albert or- in this case Selmer Paris Albert type clarinets have a one- piece key of swan- necked shape soldered to the pivot tube in contrast to my instrument where the speaker key is two-piece.”
