Hi, I was wondering how I'd be able to find the year of my Buffet E11 clarinet. It is one of the models made in Germany, and it has the model number 436682 on it. It has blue steel springs, and I'm not completely sure if it has nickel or silver plated keys. It has been a very good clarinet so far, and I love how it plays and its tone. I've had it for a little over a year now amd habe had no problems with it. Thank you for your help! Now all I need is a good mouthpiece to go along with it!

That's a one from sometime in the early to mid '90s as it still has the metal thumbrest (unless they kept that on E11s when the B12 changed to a plastic one) and the 2nd generation case with the burgundy lining which was the B&H Group colour at that point in time (it was blue before that and a greeny/grey colour afterwards when they became 'The Music Group').

The clarinet itself has the soldered on touchpieces for the side Eb/Bb, side F# and throat A key instead of them being integral with the key arms as on earlier models. Also has a Buffet nylon adjusting screw on the throat G# key when earlier ones had a metal one without a head. The keys are nickel plated on these ones - they changed to silver plate in the later '90s.

Watch that case clasp as they were notorious for the projecting lug dropping out which was a design flaw, so the case couldn't be closed - they only seemed to be a push-fit part rather than being integrally moulded with the rest of the case. I used to fix them in with a small wood screw (for a thumbrest) to secure them. The later case was flat on top with two clasps and integrally moulded lugs that stayed put.

The opinions I express are my own.

Chris is about right.
The E11 uses same serial list as the B12. from my records:-
366xxx = 12/1989
577xxx = c 1996
So at rough guess 436682 would come in at 1992/93

Being labeled "Made in W Germany" puts it before re-unification in 1990. I've liked the German E-11s I've tried. They just have that Teutonic sound to them.
