 clarinet on airplane

Is it perfectly safe to travel with my clarinet on an airplane? I plan to put it in my small suitcase and put it in the overhead luggage bin. Any potential problems I should be aware of? Thanks for your help.

I'd be very cautious about placing it in an overhead bin; rather I would let it share space with my feet on the floor. You have no guarantee that somebody won't--in an effort to jam a suitcase into a too small bin space, knock your case onto the floor.

I travel a couple flights every week and have seen clarinets both under seat and in the overheads, with no problem. The air in a plane is a bit dry but nothing all that bad.

Put your reed knife in your suitcase. They will take that. I've lost 2 from forgetting.

You have to remember to pack the clarinet and the ammunition separately. [wink]

A quick search yielded no "Clarinet on Airplane". I expected to find at least something in the school band literature from the 1950's, perhaps a blend of the styles of "Clarinet on the Town" with "Flight of the Bumblebee".

By "put your knife in your suitcase" I don't think Bob is referring to the suitcase you intend to take on the plane with you, but the one you will check in....

I've taken clarinets and oboes on as part of my hand luggage and stored them in the overhead compartment things with no problem.

Sometimes you don't even have to remember to pack the ammo if you're flying to the Phillipines ...

The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra owned an E flat clarinet that lived in a plastic tube (similar to those used to transport plans etc) rather than an instrument case. Written on the exterior was "CSO Rocket launcher", which could create trouble if it were taken on the plane.....
