What markers are good for writing on the curved side base of reed? I am using a Sharpie Fine Point and it seems to smear after only a day or two.

Staedler permanent Lumocolor does a very good job to stay permanent.
F (fine) or S (superfine) tips are two good options to write neatly.

Sharpie Permanent Markers should do the trick.
But I would ask, why not place your nomenclature on the butt end or the flat surface (keeping reeds in some order in a case should sort out the matter as long as some surface is marked)?

I've used a Sharpie permanent marker, but, yes, it does eventually smear. These days, I generally make any marking about date of first use on the flat side at the butt end with pencil. I have at various times used both Arabic and Roman numbers penciled onto the butt end - takes a little care to write legibly in so small a space, but doable.
For awhile, when I was writing with the Sharpie on the bark side, I was then cutting a small piece of Scotch tape off the roll and putting it over the Sharpie ink to protect it from contact. Worked well, but also was a little tedious.

I was using tiny pieces of label tape on the butt end curved side, not the very bottom end, and I avoided writing on the flat side of reed at the butt for didn't know if it would cause harm. But I do find labeling reeds helpful. Perhaps I will try pencils and different markers, and maybe go back to tape even if it is tedious. I like to write the reed unique number and also the brand, strength, and number place in box I assigned like R3/2 for Rico 3 strength I named 2nd.
I write the unique reed ID # on the curved side at the butt. The label tape did stay on and remain legible. after 3 or 4 times through short playings I will try to rate each reed good, fair, poor, bad with 1-4 dots but maybe not on the reed for I gather that may change with time or different conditions. I have a paper chart list of all the reds with columns to track them.
