 Walmart sells mouthpieces
Author: Dan Shusta

When I typed in "clarinet mouthpiece" in the Walmart search section, I came up with the following:

http://www.walmart.com/search/?query=Clarinet%20mouthpiece

This may be old news to some of you but totally new to me.

(241 clarinet mouthpieces and 688 saxophone mouthpieces)

Of course if those mouthpieces were being sold for $20 or $30 dollars (what mass produced mouthpieces used to sell for in the 70's), that would be news.

They've got reeds too. And Vandy 2.5 isn't listed as "Shipped by Music123"

I work in the Garden shop at Wal Mart. We sell virtually everything on our "Site to Store." We have to keep up with Amazon. The good thing about Wal Mart is that you can buy your mouthpiece, play your final concert with the Cleveland Orchestra, and return it and get your money back.

To runner:

Let me make sure I got this right...

Could a player order 12ea CL5 mouthpieces (I saw the clickable limit was 12), try them out for 29 days, return them to WalMart and not pay any restocking or cleaning fees? In other words, get a "total" or "full" refund back?

Walmart's Return Policy
Walmart reserves the right to limit or decline returns or exchanges regardless of whether you have a receipt

In my eight years at Wal Mart, my store always "gives the customer what they want." If the customer service rep hints that they may not get a refund, they customer asks (ie raises his/her voice)for a manager; the manager then grants them a refund. We do not give cash for not having a receipt. We give them a gift card. This is the way it works. Sad.

Well this IS news.

This is the place to try out mouthpieces!

Of course if we can get Target in on it, we may still see those lower prices :-)

Paul, I hope this doesn't lower your excitement level...

I just called Music123 and asked them how all of this works.

I was told (and allowed to reveal) that when you buy a mouthpiece from WalMart and there is a "Sold & Shipped by Music123" declaration, you are actually buying from Music123. Any mouthpieces you don't want have to be returned to them (Music123) and are subject to a "sterilization fee". And, of course, you'll have to add in the postage for the return shipment.

So, my understanding is that whenever there is a "Sold & Shipped by" declaration, the buyer is actually purchasing from and will be subject to the actual seller's return policy.

The info that I still need to find out is what happens if there is no "Sold & Shipped by" declaration.

There are many student and intermediate clarinets on that site selling for over $1500 and there is no "sold & Shipped by" declaration.

Perhaps "runner" can fill us in about these buying situations.

Paul, you may be right...

I found a Vandoren M13L with no "Sold & Shipped by" declaration. When I clicked on "add to cart", another screen came up saying "Sold by walmart.com".

I did the same for a Ravel clarinet which cost over $1500 and had no "Sold & Shipped by" declaration. After I added it to "my cart", another screen popped up exclaiming "Sold by walmart.com".

So, it's still unclear to me, however, wouldn't it be nice to order a dozen mouthpieces with no "Sold & Shipped by" declaration, try them out and return them to WalMart? Hmm...this sounds too good to be true.

I am sure these aren't made in Asian sweat shops, right? Talk about a Walmart Super Center with a woodwind department! Cool. Let's see ... milk, bread, coffee, sugar, cork grease, V12s, and a 66 mm Fatboy barrel.
