In these humid summer months, my clarinet cork has been swelling; making it extremely hard to put together and take apart.
After taking an emery rag and sanding the cork down, I still had issues.
I placed a dehumidifier in the room that I keep my clarinet in and within a few days, my clarinet assembled very easily. I do plan on keeping this dehumidifier running until the cold months. Is this going to damage my clarinet in anyway??

My studio is in my basement;I run a dehumidifier all summer and have done for years. And have never cracked a horn in the summer, other than an outdoor concert in Crested Butte where it dropped under 50 degrees F. Without the dehumidifier I'd be growing mushrooms; it just keeps it around 50%, which is higher than it is in winter anyway.

As long as it doesn't get into the 30 percent range it should be fine. Most dehumidifiers won't take it down that low anyway. Around 50 percent would be great.

The comic Steven Wright likes to point out how he enjoys sticking a humdifier and a dehumidifer in the same room, and having them "fight it out."
