Hello - can anyone recommend a mouthpiece that's similar to the M13 Lyre in terms of a dark/rich tone, but maybe more projecting? After chipping my old M13, I tried a Fobes San Francisco and found it a little too bright and easy-blowing than I was used to. It's true that picking a mouthpiece is a personal choice, but any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'd recommend trying an ESM (Ernst Schreiber Michelstadt) MCK-1 (black acrylic without the metal ring). It's a very similar facing to the M13 but has gobs of clarity. Madison Band Supply in Madison AL carries them.

Clark Fobes makes a number of facings and styles. His mouthpieces are great players. The one you have tried may not have fit you. You might contact Clark and ask for recommendations. Dave McClune is not as widely known, but makes a really nice mouthpiece. http://www.mcclunemouthpiece.com

Thanks so much for all your suggestions. Being a college student and more of a casual player, good advice is hard to come by.
Just one more question, can a mouthpiece make much difference in the altissimo register? I cringe in anticipation of hearing myself play notes up there...more often than what's probably normal.

First off, the Vandoren M13 does usually project quite well, with a refined and centered tone that is very transparent. What it may lack is a lot of amplitude or volume.
I would not suggest the EMS as a good replacement because that German piece really has a very different, perhaps more diffuse, tone.
A good candidate for you that might be less bright than the Fobes CWF and more dynamic than the Vandoren M13 is the new Le Vecchia mouthpiece from Bob Bernardo (who worked as a designer for the Rico Co. for many years.)
You can hear Joe Bonfiglo trying one of these out on YouTube if you search there for La Vecchia Classical Mouthpiece. You can also hear Bonfiglo play the Flight of the Bumblee on the Le Vecchia web site at

I haven't yet tried one of these for myself but I am impressed by the very fluid and even sound I hear across the registers when Bonfiglo plays it. It seems to radiate the tone well in a very concentrated sort of way that is neither too dark nor too bright and is quite flexible. It sells for about the same as an EMS--a little more than a Vandoren.
To me, the La Vecchia also sounds deeper, more resonant, and more colorful than the new thick-railed Vandoren BD5.

I play a very good M13-lyre before. Now I play a playnick playeasy B2 mouthpiece witht legere reed. I am so like this mouthpiece, I really don't think I will change my mouthpiece in my life anymore.
In my view, B2 is darker to M13 lyre, more soild sound. But B2 is not a very loud mouthpiece, someone may think its "projecting" is not enough, which I don't agree.

I like the M13 Lyre. To me, the M15 is brighter and may not be "better" if you want a darker sound than before. I personally love the M13 Lyre though, so I can't really comment otherwise. The darkest Vandoren I've ever played was the M30, but it also tends to play lower in pitch slightly than the other 13 series
