 Ligature suggestions?
Author: HANGARDUDE

Recently I have been a new ligature due the restricting sound of my Versa(flaps down). The sound I want is a fairly dark, rich sound yet clearer and less resistant than the Versa or the Dark, but yet not too much "ping".
I have a list of the ligatures I have in mind,
BG Super Revelation
BG Duo
Rovner Legacy
Rovner Versa-X
Rovner Platinum
Vandoren Optimum Gold
or some other good suggestions which you fellas can come up with.
I use it mostly with my clarinets, and my French and German bass clarinets.

Of the list I like the BG Super Revelation. Really good articulation and the sound belies what you might expect from a thick vinyl pouch (you might think it dulls the sound but it doesn't seem to affect the sound negatively at all).

What other positions for the flaps have you tried? Are they more restrictive or less?

This is so reed, instrument and player dependent that I don't think there is a real answer to this part of your question. The ligature arguably (or maybe not) contributes the smallest portion of the sound quality to the system.
Not that its contribution is zero, but that changes in the other parts of the system will negate most of any advantage one ligature seems to give you over the other. Also, different ligatures fit specific mouthpieces better than others. And, believe it or not (I only discovered this recently myself) some ligatures (my Vandoren Optimum) barely hold a thinner blank reed (e.g. a Vandoren Traditional ("Blue Box") even when fully tightened.

And then, your idea of "too much ping" is an individual concept.

My impression is that metal ligatures in general tend to be "clearer and less resistant" than cloth or plastic on my equipment with the reeds I use. But that's a heavily qualified response based on experience with a very few of the ones you've asked about. Others' mileage may easily differ.

Keep the Versa or a Versa X. That's a totally different issue.

I really love the Ishimori that I bought recently. That said, I don't find ligatures to make a drastic difference in my sound. It's really subtle. Maybe you should look at your mouthpiece and or reed choice first?

Funny thing...I was only recently watching some videos of the greats - Benny, Woody, Pete. And I was looking to see what kind of lig they were using. I have a couple of Rovners and a variety of the old two-screw metals. I agree with all who say the ligature makes a very small difference, and I see the greats with screws front, screws back, metal ligs...and they did just fine. Curiously, what touched this off for me was someone raving about "the Benny Goodman ligature," which had a single knob and was set to tighten the metal ligature from the far side. So, I went looking to see if I could find one - and to see him playing one. He wasn't!
