Hello,
I'll be participating in a youth orchestra this summer on clarinet for 3 weeks, and it will be by first time playing with an orchestra (I've only ever done wind ensembles). There will be 3 clarinet players, and I'm curious as to how the parts will split up. Most of the music we are playing has 2 clarinet parts, and a couple with an Eb or bass part. For the pieces with only 2 parts, will they have one on first and two on second? Or will they just have one guy sit out?

It would make sense either to wait and see, or contact the youth orchestra organizers to ask the same question. A professional orchestra would have clearly defined positions, but youth orchestras typically do their best to A) reward the best players with the best parts, but also B) make sure that everyone has something interesting to play and goes home feeling that it was a rewarding experience. It seems unlikely to me that one part only would be doubled, but that certainly could be done.

I play an adult community orchestra. The section leaders are paid a stipend, but it is basically a volunteer group with a lot of school music teachers in key positions. We have three clarinet players. If there is a bass or Eb part one of us plays it. Our principal enjoys Eb so tends to play it and pass the first part to the second chair. The 2nd and third chairs tend to take turns with bass parts. The pops music usually has three parts, but the classical music is usually only two parts. We generally double the second part because the first part tends to be higher and carry better.
