(As an aside does anyone know the last time the LA Phil. auditioned for this spot? Was there an audition held after Kalmen Bloch retired??)

That's surprising. The only reason I could see for that is because Michelle Zukovsky is retiring soon. The few people I can think of that might contend for this spot (if MZ retires is): Burt Hara (obviously), Michael Rusinek and Boris Allakhverdyan.

That is surprising, and sad. I've been to Disney Hall several times this season and the current configuration of the clarinet section is so fantastically good. The winds in general have been spot on and inspiring. Michelle would be missed.

Have had a couple of encounters with Ms. Zukovsky and she is a splendid person. I'm interested to see what David Blumberg has to say about this, as I believe he produced the Williams Concerto that is one of her staples. Hopefully he has some news to add to the conversation!

Everyone retires eventually. Michelle has been there for many many years. The announcement is in the present Musicians magazine. It looks like it may be an opened audition but I'm sure they will screen the applicants down to a reasonable number of qualified players. There is also an announcement for the principal job in the Baltimore Sympnony in the same issue. As I said, everyone retires sooner or later. They just filled the assistant - Eb position for the BSO. I retired last season but they have not yet filled my bass clarinet position. The second player is doing double duty for the time being. He plays both very well.
If my memory is correct, when Kalman retired they moved Michell up and gave her job to Levy who was playing bass at the time and filled the bass chair. When he passed away they bought in Burt Hara. I don't know if that was an opened audition for by invite only. He may have been subbing with them when MN was on strike and just offered him the job, I'm not sure.

Actually Zukovsky, like almost all American players of her generation, trained on the Buffet Boehm clarinet, just as her father had done. I believe she was already a member of the LA Philharmonic when she decided to switch to Oehler.

I met Michele and her father in London when the ICA held their annual meeting here in 1984.
I recall being surprised when they performed duo works together with her father on Boehm and Michele on Oehler system since I knew that her father had been one of her main teachers.
After the performance we spoke again and Michele confirmed that she had made the switch whilst in the orchestra and that, if my memory is correct, that she made the transition in about 3 weeks. Some going.

Back in the 1970s, she told several people (including her teacher, Leon Russianoff) that it was all about sound. She simply found the timbre of the Oehler instrument more satisfying and appealing than the sound of the best Boehm and reform Boehm instruments.

At the Clarinet Congress in London in 1980, Michele Zukovsky said that when she went to study with Karl Leister, he told her that his style of playing depended on the Oehler clarinet. He preferred that she switch so she could get the most from him. She did switch and has played Oehler clarinets ever since.
Her father, Kalmen Bloch, told me that her sound on Oehler clarinets was closer to that of Simeon Bellison than any other player.

It was my understanding at the time that the conductor, forget his name right now, famous though, wanted two different sounds in his wind section. A German sound and a French-American sound. At least that's what I heard at the time.
