 What system do you prefer?
Author: Mirko996

Hi, I opened this thread just to feel a little what you think of the various systems for clarinet, for example Boehm or German or albert [...]
I see a lot of system and i don't remember all but my preferite is McIntyre System, Marchi selmer ( i would like listen that... it's very curious system) and reformed boehm ( Herbert Wurlitzer )

Selmer also made Bb and A clarinets with Mazzeo System (named after its inventor Rosario Mazzeo of the Boston Symphony Orchestra) whereby throat Bb is played with the throat A key with the addition of putting down any LH or RH main action fingers (except LH3 on the basic models).

While the left thumb is off the thumb plate (it has a covered plate instead of a thumb ring), putting down the LH or RH fingers opens a tonehole in the same location as the Bb trill key on clarinets, so you can do a G-A trill by trilling any main action fingers or A-Bb by holding the throat A key open and trilling with any main action fingers.

While it made intervals with A or Bb to the upper register easy, it did mean you had to play open G or throat G#/Ab as a fully 'open' note without any RH (or LH) fingers closed for resonance or in preparation for going to an upper register note as you can on a standard clarinet.

The Selmer Mazzeo system, nicely described above by Chris is what I have been using for the past 45 years.

My clarinets - A and B-Flat - Selmer Model 10. Mazzeo

While 19 key 7 ring and 20 key 7 ring full Boehm Selmers are my clarinets of choice (CT, Series 9 and 9*), I would also love to get a Bb or a set of reform Boehms.

Also would like to get a Selmer CT full Mazzeo lower joint as they have articulated E/B-F#/C# mechanism (like saxes and oboes) and a LH low Eb key. So if there's one laying disused with a badly split top joint going spare anywhere ...

I think it has all to do with what you start playing, or get used to playing. The Oehler clarinets can do everything that a Boehm can but you need to be dedicated to it to make it work right.

I feel the same about "original instrument" playing. If you are really dedicated (that is, playing that instrument most of the time) to producing the best sound and intonation that you can from them, you will be able to get a wonderful product. If you only play on it every now just to say "well that's what people heard in the 18th Century," then I don't think you are really getting an accurate representation.

Playing Brahms on Oehler systems adds another dimension that Boehm systems don't have - it just feels right somehow. My main gripe with Oehler systems is playing something like Db-Eb-F in the lower register as it means sliding the side Bb/Eb and F keys. Upper register Bb and C can be played with forked and cross fingerings which have a special tone quality that again Boehm systems don't have due to the fully vented fingerings for Bb and C they use.

Mirko - I think the Selmer Eb cost me £980 from eBay (in Hungary) which I think was a very good price for a pro level Eb clarinet and especially a full Boehm one which are very rare. I only know of mine and three others.

The only other full Boehm Ebs I've seen were two older ones made by Amati from the '60s or '70s, but they're not all that great - nowhere near Selmer league.

I am looking out for a Selmer full Boehm C clarinet to complete the set, but I only know of one in existence and it's in the Shaclketon Collection:

Oh my... it wasn't good idea create full boehm for C flat clarinet... it has a lot of problem of intonation and sound... think with low eb (or maybe not...)
However Full boehm e flat clarinet i find are only Selmer and price various 1200€ to 1800€ (used...) the only i finded but there's not price is a Chapart and was selled by seller...
amati i know the existence of full boehm and i think isn't convenient buy it, is like buy a garbage (in my opinion there're better clarinet or instrument than amati)

I know that some of the contemporary musicians playing in the New Orleans style prefer to use the Albert system. Evan Christopher will be doing a residency at my workplace later this summer and I'll be sure to ask him about this.

In regard to the full Boehm Eb clarinet, I own one that I bought at a garage sale for $40. Brought to the USA by a returning WWII sailor, It needed an overhaul and a bit of tuning, so I got the late Glen Johnston to work on the tuning. It was made by the Japanese Musical Instrument Company, now known as Yamaha, and is labelled in Japanese characters. Since it has the "famous" donut key for forked Bb/Eb, I assume the date of manufacture could be from 1910 to 1920. That company later made airplane propellers and subassemblies for the Zero airplane in WWII. Some of its facilities were heavily shelled by the USA just prior to the end of the war.

In comment to the original question, I and many Americans use the standard Boehm system.

It misses a lot with the discussion but I wanted to tell you that I'm surprised by the ignorance of the people who say that the full
Boehm sistem are out of tune...i.e. I tried two full boehm system and not have all this trouble , in fact , are clarinets extraordinary that people have never found a way to get to know

The notes I have trouble with being flat on my full Boehms are the low F, E and Eb - but low F and E are generally flat on most standard clarinets without any special mechanism fitted to correct that.

Really!
above all in the other clarinets the low register is quite out of tune. However I'm angry with this person because he thinks that no longer uses the full boehm for that reason but I love this system and say it is out of tune , but in reality it was the people at the time that they did not want to learn.
However i listen today a clarinettist who's play amapola with e flat clarinet and Have woundeful sound... When i can Have some money i Will buy it

So now it seems I'll be needing not only a full Boehm C clarinet, but also a full Boehm D clarinet to complete my lineup of full Boehms!

Although I do own an alto clarinet (a Yamaha), I can't really agree with their comment saying 'It is a much sought after instrument and is particularly appreciated in chamber music.' I can't name a single piece of chamber music that includes an alto clarinet.
