What you wear may affect your tone

I did something so dumb today, so I just had to share.

We finally got some nice weather in Georgia so we opened all the windows at home to air out the house. By the time I was ready to practice today, it was a little chilly so I put on my big terry cloth robe.

I sat down to practice and put on a good reed. I sounded terrible -- like my clarinet was all stuffed up. I suspected my reed (it's always the reed's fault, right?) so I tired another. It still sounded all stuffed up. I looked through my clarinet thinking I might have left the swab inside (I don't every put the swab in my bell after cleaning, but I thought I might have had a senior moment). No swab.

Then I got up and walked into my husband's studio and tried my clarinet in there. It sounded great. Geez I was puzzled. I went back to my studio and sat down again, and the clarinet was all stuffed up.

When I stood up and tried again, it finally it me. MY TERRY CLOTH ROBE was the culprit. My bell was so close to my robe when I was sitting it was acting like sound proofing material.

Guess I'll officially call this a "senior" moment.

Ha!

Reminds me of my trick for reaching low Eb on my standard clarinet. Position the bell between the legs and close them enough so the material of the pants mostly blocks the exit of the bell, and play louder to compensate for the mufflement. Works well wearing loose denim jeans.

This is proof that materials really do matter. Just curious, what color is the robe and would that not make a big difference, too?

The difference between bright-stuffy and dark-stuffy?
