I can't remember the name of a website where you can download copies of music that is no longer copyrighted. It lets you download entire scores or just specific parts. Can anybody help me out? Thank you!

Be a little bit aware - copyrights aren't consistent from one nation to another, so some of the music on IMSLP (The Petrucci Music Project) are still protected here but not in other places. The website generally warns you, then leaves you with the decision about whether to download protected music or not.

Good point, Karl. That Petrucci Music Project site is a gem for anyone who needs to research historic editions of music. I'm writing some fiction set in the London music scene in 1888. I've gradually kicked out most of my fictional characters and replaced them with real people (including the great clarinet player, Henry Lazarus), because the real people turned out to be much more interesting. Thanks to Petrucci, I've been able to print out the scores for then-contemporary music those musicians used.

To hear the audio, click on the "Scorch Plug-In" box above the score.

BTW, there is another site devoted entirely to public domain band music:

http://www.bandmusicpdf.org/

Obviously, you won't see any of the greatest hits by Quincy Hilliard or James Swearingen, but a lot of old standards - including the Holst Eb Suite (I think not in its most recent edition) and lots of standard marches. The publication dates seem to range from 1886 to 1922.
