 Hindemith Sonata recordings?
Author: Filettofish

Anybody care to share their preferred recording of the Hindemith Clarinet Sonata? I've been searching for a fabled recording Stanley Drucker supposedly did as a part of a complete collection of NY Phil principal players' performances of his sonata series, but to no avail. Any of you know where I could find that?

Drucker recorded the Hindemith Sonata with pianist Judith Olsen. On the same record he played music by Weber, Cavallini and Brahms. The record was originally called "Music for Clarinet" and was reissued in whole or part as a play-along album in the Music Minus One series, as "Advanced Clarinet Solos" I believe.

It will probably take me a week to find the original recording and give you more specific details (label and number). I know I have the first one but I do not have the MMO play along version. Perhaps others on this list do.

For some superb clarinet playing and great rapport with the pianist--whether you like the rather romantic interpretation or not--I suggest the recording by Los Angeles Philharmonic clarinetist David Howard on YouTube. Just search YouTube for
David Howard Hindemith Clarinet Sonata to find it.

WOW, Howard's recording is superb, and only 6 views? A shame. Thank you for introducing me to his recording, and if you do have more information on Drucker's recording that would also be fantastic. I'm trying to get as many great interpretations of this piece into my head before I create my own.

Woe is me! I hadn't pulled that Drucker LP with Judith Olsen out of the mothballs for maybe 15 or 20 years. My LP index (which only I can read) says the recording includes works by "Brahms, Cavallini, Hindemith, and Weber" because those are the composers' names printed on the front of the LP record jacket. But--lo and behold--on the vinyl record inside, one does find Brahms, Cavallini, and Weber, but no Hindemith. Instead of Hindemith, the label on the record itself lists the Dello Joio Conccertante twice! Once on each side of the LP?

So is the Hindemith actually on this LP? I distinctly (ok maybe not so distinctly) recall listening to a recording of Drucker performing at least one movement of the Hindemith Sonata, but was it on this LP or some other?

Hoping to solve this mystery (or make it still mysterious), I will have to borrow my little cousin's retro LP player and find out. (Also this gives me a chance to listen once again to Bram Dewilde play the Mozart Concerto with the Concertgebow--another LP I just found among the mothballs.

It turns out that my recording is also a MMO (Music Minus One release), from 1973. The full title is
"Music Minus One Laureate Series--MMO 8018--Music for Clarinet."

After I give this LP a listen, I'll let you know if the Hindemith (in whole or part) is really on it.

If it is and you want to make a copy, let me know.

Drucker did the Hindemith Sonate with Judith Olson on MMO 8015.

He does movements 2 and 4. He also plays the Brahms F minor 4th movement, and the Mozart Concerto 3rd movement

I have the recording. The actual sound is dry, with little studio echo, but his playing is fabulous.

BTW- The label on MMO 8018, which I also have, is wrong (typical for Music Minus One)

Thanks GBK. But on the MMO vinyl LP 8018, is Drucker playing any Hindemith or just Cavallini, Weber, Brahms, and Dello Joio?

MMO 8015 appears to have been reissued as a paperback book including the music score with an attached CD. In this version, it was called
"Music Minus One Advanced Contest Solos Vol 1". However, buyer beware!
Used book stores may be selling these as books without the attached CD; instead of Music Minus One, they may be Music Minus CD.

The original MMO 8015 LP is very scarce.

There is no Hindemith on MMO 8018, just Cavallini, Weber, Brahms, and Dello Joio.

Music Minus One is known for their lack of proofreading, among various other problems.

I had a friend who did some jazz recordings for MMO. They owed him a ton of money which he never got before he finally died.

Sad.

I had started/ran an accompaniment business in the mid late 90's due to MMO being so bad. There are some great recordings, but also some cringeworthy ones too. Limited rep!
