 Clothing for Clarinetists

I think young Mr. Abramovitz does a remarkable job with the Debussy Premiere Rhapsody here period, let alone for his age:

Mesager's Solo De Concours too:

That said, might anyone postulate a clarinet related reason why he appears to be wearing some sort of wrap around his neck?

His Canadian extraction would suggest clothing choices virtually indistinguable from those of US citizens, where I haven't seen such a style before (for all the last word on clothing style on am not.)

Maybe it's just so "crazy cold" where he lives and this helps with warmth.

Maybe it's just a sore throat thing.

Or maybe a conversation similar to the following took place:

Mom: "Eric, you look rediculous in your father's shirt. The neck is 3 sizes too large for you. Throw this on."

More important, his interpretations and ability far exceed his age I think, neck wrap or not.

This is played by a 13 yo... it is performed on a tosca as I understand.

Does anyone care about what the player is wearing? Not me certainly. I'm more interested in the musicianship above all else.

...just a question Mr. Cigleris, which I thought might be clarinet related, admist my comment and praise of the muscianship we agree earns top billing.

I find irony in the attribute (discussion of musicianship) you seek more of, but contribute none of yourself.

That said, if I had commented on the gentlemen's socks, for example, I could see your point completely.

I tend not to here because the majority of posters are only interested in equipment and many other (what seem like trivial) things. I'm sorry if that comes across as condescending, that is not my intention.

I don't know how it is in England across the pond, but here in Pennsylvania, most audition flyers stress the importance in proper attire and they tell you it is part of how you will be judged. With that said, I would think classic music might be better accepted by greater multitude if it cared for music more so than how you look while producing the music. Furthermore, if the jury was judging based on your accuracy, technical difficulties, and artistic presentation as guideline for example. But all too often, theses are not the basis on how you are judged is what I am told.

I confess that when I looked at the first (Debussy) video, I thought it was just some kind of turtle-neck undershirt sticking out above his collar. Looking at the Messager video, I see that it's a wrap, maybe a couple of inches wide, around his throat - there's skin showing between the wrap and the shirt collar.

He must have some reason for it. But I won't even try to guess what it is.

He does not wear it in an interview on the CBC website and has an ordinary looking neck in the video. Incidentally, his greatest fear is "bad reeds"
