What kind of electronic effects box did they use that made it sound like a trumpet or cor anglais?

I'll share 1 off clarinet topic briefly.
The Carpenters played the songs of my youth. I am sure their hits played a fundamental role in my discovering a love for music as I listened to them on the AM music radio of the time. Everytime I listen to them today I am struck with the bittersweat beauty of Karen's voice, and how she suffered and died from Anorexia Nervosa, at the time only even known of by a hand full of doctors.
My feelings, if they could best be encapsulated in a song from another hit of that era, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_P-v1BVQn8 would be Gilbert O'Sullivan's Alone Again, Naturally, and how it juxtaposes this toe tapping melody with lyrics on self inflicted mortality.
Off soap box.
Wait, 1 more thing. Karen Carpenter was consider by some to be a near virtuosic percussionist.

Did Tony Peluso use a metal plectrum? Only you can hear the clavichord-like, high pitched 'pip' as he hits the strings before the actual note starts in his solo in 'Goodbye to Love'.

Did you know that today (Feb 4th) is the anniversary of Karen's death?

I saw the CARPENTERS when they came to the college I was attending in Wisconsin. Karen was playing drums and singing. She loved playing drums, and that was a comfort zone for her. She was forced to be the front person and only sing. That put a lot of pressure on her, and with her eating disorder only made things worse. She was a good drummer.
I believe they used an Eventide Harmonizer for the multi-part vocals in performance. I seem to recall them using several Shure Vocal Master P.A. systems which by today's standards would be a toy. They made a ton of money for A&R at a time when the company was ready to go under. She had an amazing voice. As for the clarinet player, that was unheard of to have a clarinet player as part of a touring rock/pop band.

What a sad thing to lose talent like that.
What a wonderful thing to have enjoyed her.
Didn't know about the anniversary...
This is a genuine signature.

One of my favourite songs is Tunic by Sonic Youth, a lament for Karen Carpenter. It's probably not to the taste of many people who read this BB but I find this song incredibly moving. I was just a little too young in the 1970's to really appreciate the Carpenters, but one of my early "musical memories" was of the "big kids" dancing to Beatles and Carpenter records on an old gramophone at our friends farm, a few years before punk/disco took over...

I love both the Carpenters and Sonic Youth. The vast variety of music is one of its greatest blessings, at least for me.
As for Carpenters "clarinet moments", this one is my favorite. How DOES he get that sound?!

Maybe that box of tricks he's plugged into has Herb Alpert hiding in it.
From what I understand from a documentary, Richard Carpenter produced this:

Scroll down - this comment made me laugh:

My god ... why did I ever take voice lessons or bother to tune my guitar, if these talentless slackers could make millions."

DAMN that was nice! thanks for posting, GBK. did anybody else go "Ewwwwww" when they passed the clarinet?
There's a set of Youtube recordings of Carpenters tracks lifted (somehow) from SACD, featuring 3 tracks only: Karen's voice (dry, no effects), Joe Osborne's bass (dry, no effects) and Hal Blaine on drums. Sometimes you can hear other tracks bleeding in, but otherwise it's just those 3, and I gotta say, she sounds just as good as in the fully-produced versions. What a singer.
Bonus for bass fanatics, you can really hear Joe Osborne's lines all the way thru.
If you're interested, do a Youtube search for 'Carpenters near-acapella'.

If you wonder who murdered the Carpenters, then Chrissie Hynde is guilty as charged:

How many extra syllables can she use in practically every word?
