I got my box of the V21 reeds today. I played the first 5 reeds for a few minutes each. Of course it is too early to tell what they will be like after breaking them in, but in the few minutes I played them I liked them. I will report back as the days pass, and I look forward to hearing what others have to say about them..

Oh wow I didn't even know they'd come out with a new type of reed. Right now, I play their 56's and V12's at a strength of 3.5. Maybe these will soon be replaced by the V21's...... Let us know how they are!

Weiner Music is delivering them. No opinion yet - my mouthpiece seems to need a 3-7/8 - somewhere between a 3-1/2+ and a 4, but I've only play tested the reeds once.

This is day 3. So far I am very happy with these reeds. On my mouthpiece (Gregory Smith Kaspar, cocus wood) these reeds feel very secure. The sound is very nice with lots of depth. The reeds all needed just a bit of work with the ATG to balance. Still in the break in process, but things are looking very promising.

How do these compare to other reeds you have tried (esp. other Vandorens, if you have tried them)?

I just got mine today, and played them all for a bit. Of the 10 of them, 3 were NOTICEABLY softer than the rest, but nothing unworkable (in fact, there are several spots in the show I'm currently playing where I think that'd work to my advantage).
The other 7, without doing a single thing to them, adjustment-wise, I would use at work in a heartbeat, right out of the wrapper. They are (other than the aforementioned 3) remarkably consistent, easy to articulate on, and they sound GREAT with my mouthpiece (Vandoren B40D). I'm looking forward to seeing how they hold up over the next couple weeks of heavy playing.
I normally play 56s, and these do seem to have a bit more bass in the sound, with equally good response. It's been a very long time since I've played a blue-box or a V12, so I can't really give a fair comparison there.

I would like to know about how these compare to the D'addario Resrve Classics. Anyone have experience with both of these?

I think the most notable thing to say about these reeds is that upon my first play through (about 5 minutes a piece) it reminded me of a Marcellus comment from over 30 years ago. There was a particular student attending the regular summer master classes at Northwestern who had a really nice sound. Robert Marcellus even commented,"You have nice round sound with a candle in the middle of it."
These reeds seem to have this sound to them. They have more of the "colors" I associate with the V12, but there is a real core to the sound. I wouldn't say that these reeds are exactly what you'd expect from a narrow, Rue Lepic cut reed with a V12 vamp. The combination actually creates it's own unique sound.
After 5 days, I am not blown away as I was on first impression, but it is a welcome addition to the Vandoren offerings. If you like Vandorens you WILL like the 21s. But if you are IN LOVE with the V12s you may not appreciate the 'extra punchiness.'

Where are you ordering your V21's from? It seems most websites don't have them yet.

What is the rationale for the more narrow back of the reed of the V21?

I have been a player of the narrower cut 56 Rue Lepic reeds since 2005 or so. I chose these reeds for their focus of sound (more of a backbone). Given that, I prefer the V21.
About a year ago Mr. Greg Smith was trying to convince me to use V12s instead because the mouthpieces I got from him where all play tested with V12 3 1/2s which are his preference. He further informed me that they had changed significantly from what I had experienced back in the early 90's. It was only a few weeks ago that I took him up on the challenge and broke in a box of V12s. I was rather mixed in my feelings about them. V12s do seem to have more colors in the sound available to them. However, the sound is noticeably more 'diffuse' than the 56s.
My local music store is one of the first to carry 'cool stuff,' so I took the chance to try this new Vandoren reed (more like a dare). It is more accurate to say that they are "greater than the some of their parts," if you take the description of them as a cross between the 12 and 56 at face value.
I get close to the same focus of the 56 and there is more body around it. Of course I have not had the opportunity to perform with them (the only real test), but I seem to be able to push on them even more (particularly in the altissimo) and still get a real robustness in return.
I don't know for sure if the narrowness of the reed is what provides the focus but if it is, that is more than enough rationale for me.
