Cesar Franck Dm Symphony Bass Clarinet Part...

Has anyone got a treble clef part for this?

I've got the published part which is all in bass clef and IMSLP has the same which is no good for me. The 'Special Parts' page hasn't got a treble clef transcription for it at all.

So before I start to do a marathon slog on Sibelius to transcribe the whole lot, has anyone got a transcribed copy they're willing to share?

And before anyone chimes in with 'Why don't you just learn to read bass clef?' I can read bass clef on other bass instruments that are normally written for in bass clef (eg. double bass, bassoon and contrabassoon), but I can't put that into practice on clarinets as I find it an absolute nightmare - I'm just not used to it and I'm not about to start now.

The opinions I express are my own.

Luck's Music Library shows a "transposed" bass clarinet part for $10.50. Kalmus might also have it.

Thought I had one from the distant past (before I learned to read bass clef), rummaged around but couldn't find it. Fortunately it's not a very technical piece, so Chris, if you want to bite the bullet and go through the pain of adapting your bass clef-reading skills to the clarinet, this is probably not a bad opportunity.

For some reason (onset of senility?), even though you clearly wrote "Franck," Chris, I somehow read "Saint-Saens." Luck's does, however, also have a transposed part for the Franck for sale but only $US 7.25. Of course, shipping will probably be at least that much again. The last time I bought music from Europe, I paid 4 euros for the music and 8+ for shipping. [frown] Still, it beats hours at the computer if no one turns up a free copy.

Accidentally I also have to play Franck and also am not used to read the bass clef. In fact I am still learning to play the bass clarinet, as my orchestra needs someone to play it and there are enough people playing the normal B clarinet. It would be a oppurtunity to learn the bass clef of course, but as I see you have the transposed part I would be very grateful if you could send it to me. I don't know how to contact you off line but maybe you could contact me?

I played this piece last year and the biggest problem for me was playing it in Bb. I used to cover a fair amount of bassoon parts when we didn't have bassoonists, so between that and the mandatory class piano that every music major must take, reading bass clef in C is pretty easy for me, but reading it in Bb was almost like having to learn how to read it all over again. The first few rehearsals were interesting as my fingers would play some of it in Bb and then go on autopilot and play some of it C (of course, this happened at crucial points like cadences and fermatas). I even had to write "Play in Bb" at the top of every page until I could do it automatically.

Be aware that the couple of treble clef spots in this piece must be played up an octave.
