Does the 2nd double Eb or do they need to be two separate players?

Agreed. As far as I remember, none of his symphonies that I've played have the 2nd clarinet doubling Eb.

One of my favorite pieces ... especially the last movement.
The Finale is also commonly played in wind bands, as well.
Not had the pleasure of playing the 5th in orchestra, though ... darn!

If you've never heard the incredible 1959 (I think it was) recording of this by Bernstein and the NY Phil, you owe it to yourself, it's head and shoulders the finest interpretation ever (in my opinion). His choice and control of tempi is unmatched, and the slow movement is easily one of the most moving pieces of music I've ever heard, period.
Played this once in a reading orchestra and I seem to recall that the Eb clarinet is tacet for two of the movements, does anyone know? I'm fortunate to be able to play it again in a few months, can't wait!

Eb plays the entire piece, but has a lengthy rest in the slow movement.

Don't forget your ear plugs for the first and last movements. Especially if the brass are directly behind you.
