What instruments do these clarinetists play?
Author: sarahep1993

Can anyone help me with some research I am currently doing?

I need to find out what makes of clarinet/systems the following famous clarinetists play(ed) on:

Martin Fröst, Emma Johnson, Michael Collins, Karl Leister, Richard Stoltzman, Gervase de player.

If you know any or all, please let me know!

Thanks in advance

Karl Leister is a longtime player of Oehler (or German) system Wurlitzers.

Richard Stoltzman plays standard Buffet R13s (insisting on nickel plated keys for the feel even though his sweat eats through the plating in only a few years)

Gervase de Peyer used to play Boosey and Hawkes 1010 clarinets (English made, large bore .6 inches in diameter). Since they haven't been made in many years I am to understand that he has gone to more modern large bore equivalents made by Eaton and Rossi.

Martin Frost has been seen playing a host of different modern horns to include Buffet Tosca and more custom Swedish clarinets made by Bernd Schille.

Martin never played the Swedish clarinets, he stopped by the company for a visit and took pictures. I've never seen him playing anything but Buffet.

Emma Johnson started first on 1010s but early on switched as one of the earliest players to use Peter Eaton Elite (wide bore) models and as far as I know still plays these models today.

Michael Collins played Buffets earlier on then switched to Peter Eaton (International) clarinets for several years but then started using Yamahas for a time. Not sure what he is using today.

Gervais de Peyer cerainly used 1010s for many years but later switched to Peter Eaton Elite models and as far as I know played them from that time on.

Richard Stoltzman plays R13s, extensively tweaked by his teacher, Kamen Opperman. I also play Oppermanized R13s and can tell you that they are very different from standard R13s.

When he played the Mozart Concerto at Carnegie Hall, Martin Fröst played a Tosca basset. For his encores, he played a Divine Bb.

And he learned to just go ahead and gold plate his keys.

TomS -

It's not an RC. What's stamped below the trademark is KO for Kalmen Opperman. The barrel is also Kal's, with his name written on it with a tattooist's electric pen.

A few years ago I had the opportunity to purchase one of Mr. Oppermans R13's from one of his former students. It was performance ready with spot on intonation and the set up was amazing which was done by his brother Mr. Geoege Opperman as were all of his instruments. It was basically set up to highlight the middle register and up. Since I play jazz in the style of Jimmy Guiffre which is in the low register it did not fit my needs but I regret selling it.

Michael Collins is playing Yamaha CSG IIIs.

Leonard Bernstein: "To achieve great things, two things are needed; a plan, and not quite enough time."

Mr. Shaw:

OK ... I'll take a closer look! I would have bet a "double chili cheeseburger" that it was stamped "RC" ... Wow!

That did look strange to me ... because Mr. Stoltzman always declared that he used an Buffet R13, a MP and a ligature that was customized by Opperman.

Gosh! Are Mr. Opperman's skills as a designer/modifier lost? Has anyone taken careful notes on what he did?
