Does anyone know of a good, modern version? I have a CD of Gervaise de Peyer which is beautiful - very controlled and pure - but I'm looking for a recording with more 'oomph', that pushes the Romantic side more

One player who has the style and sound to do full justice to this piece would be Ben Lulich, who I believe is now with the Seattle Symphony. I hope one day he records it. You can listen to him playing the Abyss of the Birds solo from Messian on Youtube, and see what you think.
Shirley Brill and Martin Frost both have good performances of the Fantasy Piece on Youtube, with Brill probably edging out Frost on the romantic side, though she plays only the first piece.

Thanks, Liquorice. That's a strong partnership, not a soloist and accompanist. And it does provide the Romantic oomph requested.

Excellent performance, but nobody here mentioned that it's by cello and piano, not clarinet and piano!

Clarinetist Julien Herve and pianist Kumi Matuso offer a very expressive, collaborative rendering of these pieces on a Youtube video: Schuman Fantasies, Op. 73.
