How to hold a bass clarinet
Author: derf5585

I see some bass clarinet players holding the bass clarinet like it was a baritone sax instead of between the legs. Does this upset you as it does me?

If they are able to play well, no it doesn't.

Doesn't make sense, the instrument is much more stable when it's actually in contact with the ground -- but what comes out of the horn is what's important.

Now if they play off to the side and they stink, then yes -- it's a problem.

No.

Only if that's why they stink (which is very unlikely).

If you find playing bass clarinet adopting a tenor/bari sax posture while seated annoys you, then playing tenor or bari sax with bass clarinet posture annoys me even more.

Watch this video and be suitably annoyed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMn0bLJc2Gc

I wasn't annoyed by the posture, but I definitely was by the deafening key clacking and the clumsy musicianship.

If you're holding the bass like a bari,
then you're likely to sound pretty scary.
With no logical reasons
just many band seasons
I've seen this and tell you "be wary!"

I used a peg AND a neck strap and firmly locked it all in position, straight ahead. If you were lucky to have a good bass, especially one that was airtight, in good adjustment and the neck was curved upwards enough (so you didn't feel like you were playing a bass sax), that was a big plus. I think a used a Hite MP with VD reeds, mostly.

And, you got a vibrating massage treatment when you played!

I used a lot more air on bass, and my diaphragm muscles were often sore ...

Probably not the most benificial way to get a warm rich tone and good control. But I guess if it works it works. Not what I would recommend for sure.

I did use a neck strap along with my peg for today's practice session. The result was quite nice. I plan to keep experimenting.

I've always used a peg and if I felt insecure on a given passage I would hold the bell between my crossed feet. Because I use an old Selmer the neck is not as acute as the newer models so I would hold my neck back at an angle to get the mouthpiece placed better, Not as much as a clarinet, but certianlly not like a sax. It's finding the comfortable place for the best result. With the newer necks there's no reason to hold ones neck back.
