 [New] Martin Freres barrels
Author: HANGARDUDE

I'd like to know have any players have used the Martin Freres barrels i.e. the newly established(or should we say revival?) company in 2012?

If so, what are you thoughts on them?

That is an impressive list of exotic woods available from which to chose a barrel!

I have had a quite a few pens turned for me over the years. If you haven't seen Wenge or Bocote turned into a curved surface you're missing out.

Interestingly enough the good people at Martin Freres have NO problem actually custom building a clarinet barrel. Because I have Yamaha CSGs (a small portion of the market and an odd sized barrel) I have found that most "custom" barrel makers will NOT custom make a 54mm barrel. In fact only Dr. Allan Segal is the only other custom barrel maker that was actually able to custom build a barrel for me.

I am awaiting my new Freres barrel with quite a bit of anticipation. But I can tell you that they already have my respect in that they are not a company that just says,"Here, try a bunch of these and find one that works for you."

They built me a barrel for my Forte C clarinet, and it's great. I also bought a barrel for my Yamaha CSV clarinets. I had the problem with another barrel company where my barrel shrunk, and Freres was sure to take a little longer with the testing process to ensure that there wasn't an issue with the wood shrinking.

They seem to be great people, who provide excellent customer service.

I like their vase-style barrel works well on Penzel-Mueller Artist.
They were very helpful answering e-mail questions.

Their audio samples are not too attractive to my ears... although I noticed they have hard rubber and diamondwood barrel audio clips, though it seems they don't offer the barrels in those materials?

I've used after market barrels for years now but I always try several to find the right one to fit my mouthpiece and clarinet in terms of intonation, feel and tone quality. No matter who makes it and what type of wood or material it is made of each and every one will play slightly different on everyones instruments. Every player plays differently and every clarinet and mouthpiece plays slightly different. I'm sure his barrels are very good but I always advise trying several before buying.

I received a barrel where the bore was ~0.2 mm off-center. That meant one wall was 2.8 mm while the other was 3.2 mm. Did not look nice at all. Got the answer that this does neither affect sound (might be true) nor the risk of cracking (really?). Was also told their tolerance is 0.26 mm for the centering, so that's the max off-center bore you should get.

I am happy with the traditional grenadilla barrels I received. The Hondurian rosewood barrels I ordered for a Leblanc Symphonie VII took away the bright sound so I won't use them.

You can specify measurements when you order which is a great plus.
