Hounds of Spring by Alfred Reed.
There's a solemn section of the work, soloed by the (French) Horns, that can bring tears to the listener.
(And of course like any typical band piece the clarinets get plenty of melody and play time.)

I enjoy the great British band classics like the Holst First Suite, Vaughan-Williams Folk Song Suite and Gordon Jacob Original Suite. My real favorite, though, is Paul Fauchet's Symphonie pour Musique d'Harmonie. I remember playing it many years ago when I was in high school. Unfortunately, it isn't performed very often these days, but it's a real treasure with its great clarinet (and other woodwind) parts and nice melodies.

Emotionally speaking, and when played with absolute perfection, movement 2 from Persichetti's symphony is second to none imho.
For a flash of dazzle and difficulty, Maslanka's 2nd symphony is incredibly difficult (the whole thing - you rarely hear anything other than the 4th movement). I love listening to this piece.
Whitacre's October is quite nice as well - again, played with fluidity and perfection. I've heard this played without passion and musicality too many times and it sucks.

Percy Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy
The meaningful tone colors and orchestrations are perfectly suited to the medium. I judge all wind music against it.

My concert band is preparing 'Midnight Sleighride' by Serge Prokofiev, adapted from "Troika" (Lieutenant Kije Suite) in1936 by Tom Wallace.
This spirited piece has a bass clarinet part that is delightful to play and requires concentration and endurance. Great stuff.

The group I play with is doing the Oliver Nickel arrangement of Marquez's Danzon no. 2 on our next concert - pretty nice solo clarinet part .

I like all of the Grainger, Holst and Vaughan Williams stuff ... and many, many others.
But, the arrangement of "Three Bavarian Dances" by Edward Elgar. With a small, tight ensemble and someone well handling the E-flat clarinet part, it is different and beautiful. This piece just sticks with me, for some reason ... maybe just my personal life at the time.
Some of the pieces I played in the Junior High School still linger in my happy memories ... not super difficult, but I'd love to revisit them.

I also love the Percy Grainger, Holst and Vaughn Williams stuff. I also have very fond memories of playing a Wind Ensemble arrangement of Handel's Water Music while in college. I doubt the piece is in print as it was arranged my professor and was hand written.

Honestly, Sleigh Ride. I just love playing that piece.
Good call on the holst suite. Also fun, but I prefer sleigh ride. Looking forward to Christmas concert this year just for that reason.

I like too much symphonic repertoire to make a list here.
As far as concert band repertoire goes, out of pieces I've played or read in high school band, I love the First Suite in Eb by Holst, Suite of Old American Dances by Bennett, Wedding Dance by Press, Blue Shades and Angels in the Architecture by Ticheli (Ticheli played chimes on the latter with the CA All-State band I was in), Lincolnshire Posy and Molly on the Shore both by Grainger, Symphonic Dance No. 3 by Williams, Dance of the Jesters by Tchaikocsky arr. Cramer, and Overture to Candide by Bernstein arr. Beeler.

I really like a lot of the old orchestra transcriptions, e.g. Russland and Ludmilla. Unfortunately they are seldom played. Part of the reason is the clarinet parts are too hard and the drummers don't have enough to do.

I love the Holst and Vaughan Williams works but speaking from the UK angle, can I put a vote in for more or less anything by Philip Sparke? Those of you who play in bands and don't know his stuff do give it a try! Especially Slipstream or River City Serenade or The Land of the Long White Cloud.
You'll find he is a master of great melody and texture, conjuring up anything from great serenity to excitement and bounce.
Another person who wrote some fun pieces was Goff Richards - try Barnard Castle (named after a town in the North East of England) or Doyen which was actually written as a tribute to a new model of bus!

In addition to Holst, Vaughan Williams, and Grainger. I really like the Divertimento for Band , by Persichetti and his famous Symphony for Band. Pieces that have alot of color and some fun technical issues are: Carmina Buranna by Orff, Scenes of the Louve, Dello Joio, Sketches on a Tudor Psalm by Fisher Tull, and Festive Overture by Shostakovich.
Other pieces I really enjoyed playing are Incantation and Dance and Symphony for Band by John Barnes Chance. Celebration Overture by Paul Creston one of my all time favorites, Four Scottish Dances, by Malcom Arnold. The highschool I attended many years ago really opened the door for me to appreciate this kind of band music written. Now years later my community band that I participate in brought all those wonderful memories back.

I would have to say Black Dog by Scott McAllister. I just got it yesterday, and have already listened to it for hours. It has fiery cadenzas and soft, sweet legato parts. It's beautiful and I'm hooked

My favorite piece I played is Vesuvius by Frank Ticheli. Lots of cool parts, really dynamic melody and some complicated stuff. Also really like the Artie Shaw Clarinet concerto I'm working on because I love jazz. I'm only in high school so I haven't really played a ton of pieces.
