The most important asset for any clarinet player is the ability to listen both to yourself and to others around you. There is so much talk about which set up or mpc combination or the latest new launch from Vandoren, Buffet Wurlitzer etc. Follow good old Rene Decartes and treat everything you read and hear with huge sceptisism. Only if you like something then is it good enough for you.

Karl Leister having won a competition when young was addressed by the adjudcator who said "you playing is wonderful but you have an unusual sound" he replied " but Sir I like my sound". That is the attitude we should allhave.

I think it was Paul Harvey who pointed out "Caneo Ergo Sum" - "I blow therefore I am".

Next Terminator movie- an evil time traveler hands a young Rene a clarinet and suggests he "solve all the tuning and playing issues". And modern mathematics and technology never happen, our whole world just goes "pop", like the Enterprise in "The City on the Edge of Forever".
