M30 Lyre With D'Addario Reserve Classics Better than V12's?
Author: Exiawolf

Greetings!

Today I got my hands a hold of some the new D'Addario Reserve Classic 3.5's and paired them with my M30 Lyre and it was VERY nice. The tone had a nice depth to it, the reeds were very responsive, and articulations were clear. I don't know if it's just me or does anyone else have problems with V12's on the M30 Lyre? (Such as crummy articulations)

I don't have the m30, but I do have a 5rv lyre and have used both v12's and the D'Add. My general opinion is that the D'add's are better out of the box and the v12's can but better, but its by far more hit or miss.

I tested the Reserve Classics but prefer the V12s. Good V12 reeds have something in the tone that I miss with the RCs. V12 also wins over Classic Vandoren and Rue Lepic 56.

I use both M30 and M30L.

Do you find a lack in response or articulation with the V12's?

Reserves far more consistent then VDs.. you can take box and at least 8 or 9 of them will sound and feel identical. They will be all usable and will not need adjustment.

Vandorens will be all different in strength, uneven rails and half of them will need to be sanded to make usable. Still, if you find a good one, it will sound very very good.

But IMHO the Grand Concerts Evolutions are the best choice. Good sound and consistency almost as good as Reserves. If you decide to try beware they ~1/2 size stiffer then Reserves and V12.

Exiawolf,

Definitely the bad ones. :-)

Regarding consistency, it might be true that the RCs are better. That's what I have heard and perhaps experienced (never did any statistics). So far, it doesn't make up for the tone color I miss.

I am using Ridenour's ATG system so I can fix most V12s but not all.

I also appreciate that the tip shape of the V12 matches the M30 mouthpiece. But Vandoren has started selling a V12 cutter so one can cut RCs to the right shape as well.

I can't get most V12s to work with my M30-lyre(s). Nope, not at all! I use VD Blue Box for best results. I have used Legere with the M30-lyre with success, although in hindsight, a bit "tubby". Not tried Legere signatures, yet.

With my M13 (not lyre) I use V12s ... as well as Legere regular and Quebec.

I now switch setups back and forth, depending on acoustics and type of music.

So, ditto on the V12/M30-lyre problem, IMHO.

Try the M30-lyre on some Rico "orange box", 3.5 or greater. Usable. Good for outdoor band gigs in the park.

I use these MPs on Ridenour Lyrique clarinets, but occasionally some other makes as well ...

I hate fighting reeds, so I'm using Legere more and more ...

Tom
