ESM - Ernst Schreiber Michelstadt Mouthpieces
Author: Paul Aviles

I tried a Schreiber mouthpiece today designed with the help of Roger W. McKinney. It is the MCK 1 (MR). This particular mouthpiece was made of an acrylic composite material that is translucent blue with gold flecks in it (yeah, I know) and has metal rings at the top and bottom of the tenon (this feature I like). Despite looking like something a 10th grader would use to play a "Frozen" medley, the dern thing felt and sounded AMAZING !!!!! This particular facing is close to a 5RV Lyre (easy to play, focused and yet you can just pour gobs of air down it).

Has anyone one else here tried one?

Hi Paul. I don't have that particular ESM mouthpiece but I do have a ESM F3A that came with my Schreiber 6010s, It's plastic of course and it's a very nice easy mouthpiece to use.

Just searching their website now

http://www.esm-mouthpiece.de/index.php?id=4&lang=english

could not find that designation, but I'm sure Schreiber changes styles over time like everybody else.

I tell ya though, the accuracy of the finishing makes me believe that the greater majority of these mouthpieces will be consistent........very, VERY nice!

Paul,

On the website you give, if you scroll down past the German system mpieces and then to the last entry in the Boehm system mouthpiece list you will see
a description of the MCK1 model that says, "Together with the American musician Roger W. Mckinney, we have developed the MCK1 with an opening of
1.03 mm and a length of 18 mm. It is expressly for the American market and suitable for those who prefer the American sound."

Evidently Mr. McKinney had a hand in selecting the specs and playing characteristics of this model, if indeed, it is just one model. The saxophone list shows a translucent blue model sax mouthpiece that is apparently part of the company's "Heaven" line. Does that mean that the Mckinney clarinet design comes in both regular black rubber as well as a speckled blue, acrylic "heaven" model?

It is hard to tell from the price list. The regular (rubber?) clarinet mouthpieces sell for $86.20 without a ring and 118,00 with a metal ring, No blue "heaven" model is listed specifically, but there is a "wood composite" model that sells for 161.60 with the metal ring. Is the blue stuff really a wood composite or a third alternative? All very confusing.

Do you know of any music stores currently carrying the model you tried?

All sorts of interesting developments no doubt await the world of wind instruments. Trumpet virtuoso Alison Balsom is on YouTube in a little video called "Alison Balsom, international soloist, discovers ptrupmet " (a plastic composite instrument) for the first time. And, yes, she does sound pretty much like herself on the bright red plastic instrument and mouthpiece.

Clark Fobes and Brad Behn have used acrylic for their entry-level mouthpiece for some time now, and of course, many of the Wurlitzer mpieces are also made from acrylic. I wonder if Mr. McKinny could be prevailed upon to write a little data sheet about the mouthpiece he helped design?

The specific mouthpeice I tried was in fact a "Heaven line." The dealer is about to try to be a Uebel/Schreiber dealer here in the US. He has an inquiry in right now as to the options of color for the composite acrylic (not that I wouldn't jump on the blue one if it were the only color!) From the other info on that website it seems as though most combinations of material and metal tenon rings are possible (I guess we'll find out soon).

Oh, I think those prices are in Euros though, so you'll have to budget for the exchange rate too!!!!

I was told the mouthpiece I tried would retail at about $145.00 US dollars.

Paul,
Who's gonna be an Uebel/Schreiber dealer? Is it our friend Kessler? :)

No, it's our friend Frank at Madison Band Supply in Madison AL. He will host the rep and the entire line of Uebels (just Boehms this time unfortunately) some time next month at his "Clarinet Extravaganza."
