About a year ago I was playing GD #3s on a 1.16/ML facing. Initially, I felt they were great (big sound, good response), but began to had difficulty getting them to play without effort, mostly because they were a bit hard (perhaps 2.75 might have been better). Since then I've found VD Traditional #3 to be a good choice, though they don't quite have the big sound of the GDs. In the last 2-3 months I've all but switched to the D'addario Reserve (not Classic) #3 reeds. I feel they have a better sound than the VDs and even the GDs. They also seem to be about the right strength without having to soften them on a Reed Wizard. However, I think the response of the GDs and VDs are probably superior to the Reserves.
