 double jointed issues?
Author: yeahhhboiieslice

I'm a junior in college and just started taking private lessons my freshmen year and now I transferred to a new university and have a new teacher. I never knew I was double jointed in my fingers and I never knew it was a big deal. It's mostly in my pinkies and my instructor wants me to curl my fingers more. Does anyone else have this issue and could suggest a way to "fix it?" I heard wrapping works, but I'm not quite sure.

Though it is better if you can curl those fingers I've known players with great technique that don't. If you can't just do your best and do finger studies to strengthen them, like trills go going from one key to the other over and over for a few minutes each day. It can be overcome if you can't curl them.

I am also double jointed. There is a challenge involved, and I have to say, I never managed to achieve that 'perfect curl', however, I have managed fine.

My suggestion would be to try to keep your hands and fingers as relaxed as possible. Putting pressure on the keys will make your fingers flatten out, so keep them relaxed.

In the end though, focus your energy to getting your technique smooth and solid. Everyone is built differently, so not everyone will play clarinet the same way. Use what you have to your benefit, and discover what works for you!

The pinky on my right hand has a tendency to bend at the first joint, but lock at the second joint when I have been playing too long and pressing too hard on the keys. Unfortunately I tend to procrastinate and end up practicing too long just before a performance causing the pinky to tire and begin locking up.

I have solved this problem by always have fabric surgical tape in my clarinet case (the white cotton tape 1/2 inch width). I then tape the second joint so it forces a slight bend and prevents it from straightening out completely and locking.

In the long run, though, this is just weak muscles in the little finger. You should exercise your little finger. Place the thumb of one hand behind the first joint of the little finger of the other hand. Curl the little finger and try to keep the curl as you pull with your thumb. At first you may not be able to pull very hard before the little finger pops out straight. Don't try to pull it straight, just hold it statically under stress with the little finger curled. Over time you should be able to pull harder and harder. This will make it easier to keep a curl in your fingers naturally (but keep the surgical tape handy).
