Great example of community outreach!!! Every orchestra across the country should have a similar program.
On a lighter note, the signs on the music stands facing the conductor with the names of the instruments on them reminded me of a joke:
A new, stuffy conductor takes the podium of his ensemble and proceeds to give a lengthy lecture about how things will change. He will not put up with tardiness or talking during rehearsal, showing up unprepared or unwillingness to give 100%, or poor intonation or not listening to every instruction he gives. At the conclusion of this condescending diatribe the percussionist plays a resounding "brrrrrrrrrr-room- CHING!" The conductor peers over his glasses and says,"and when I find out who did that, he's in BIG trouble!"

As one who has participated several times, I must say it is a thrill to be on the stage of Davies Symphony Hall instead of in front of it.
As fsbsde observed, there are no strings. Due, I think, to the incredible popularity of the program, strings meet on another day (as do singers).
When I've gone, with just winds and percussion the stage was full. Add a violin and the bow would have been poking somebody in the eye.
The Symphony does this twice a year and also invites small chamber groups to play (and get coached by orchestra members).
More information is here http://www.sfsymphony.org/musicmakers

To say nothing about trombones or flutes.

the word amateur and professional mean many different things...however, you can have amateur groups that are far better than many pro groups depending on the situation.
