I always worry that my neighbors will do this after listening to me play altissimo long tones...

I refuse to answer a survey question or to sign up for their website, so I can't read the article.

Earlier today I was trying to read a Lightroom thread about 100% crops, but when I declined to allow cookies, the website said goodbye.

I swear, the communists, terrorists, spammers, and phone solicitors are taking over the world. Next thing you know they'll be in Congress. Oh wait, maybe they already are.

But as to the original post... yeah, no telling who we're making mad, or what they might do about it.

I saw the article on the CenturyLink Website. I had to turn off JavaScript to read the link above.

That was CLEARLY not a fair confrontation. The kid had a working reed on his clarinet. The woman's gun wasn't loaded.

I hope they 'threw the book' at the nasty bitch.

If she's got a knife, bring a gun. If she's got a gun, bring a clarinet!

If she brings a clarinet, bring an effer (with a really hard reed). When I switched from BBb contra to effer, I discovered that C7 [C7] at fff is more than even piccolo players can bear.

Do you suppose that some of us unwittingly blow some notes above our range of hearing? ...and that dogs miles away are howling in terror?

Every thing above C6 is a "controlled" squeak anyway ;^)

If you have questions about Lightroom I can probably help you.

For some reason my dog really doesn't like lower notes, especially the lowest notes of the bass clarinet.

My cat has no problems with the clarinet, but runs from the room when I play the flute. Everyone's a critic!

The critic in this case was a 60 year old woman with a high powered rifle. The performer was an 11 year old boy playing a clarinet. He was doing his homework. She threatened him and his friends.

The child was trying to do what was expected of him, and the adults were only concerned about their comfort. Grandma didn't want the baby to wake-up, and the neighbor didn't want to hear a fledgling clarinetist. What should the child do? Especially when the neighbor is shouldering a weapon and yelling, "Fire in the hole!"

Perhaps some of you didn't understand the situation because of the moderators editing of the original post. What, as a teacher, would you advise your students?

I don't know what I'd advise my student. It's a tough place for a student, and this particular one is probably going to have some hesitation to practice now.

I routinely play in my car, on lesson days, at an abandoned shopping mall since I won't disturb anyone and it allows me to get calm and relaxed before my lesson as it gives me one last rundown on the assigned etudes & duet parts. At least in theory I shouldn't disturb anyone, but there are other folks using the abandoned shopping center for this and that and my presence makes some of them nervous. I park nearer the street for that reason.

Perhaps the student could play at his school on the playground after school (I know liability concerns would probably keep the school from offering him inside room). Or maybe there's a basement he could practice in at his home? Does he have any friends in the band who have safe practice areas?
