 Links

Can we all understand that if we post a link, to another website or to a file, then that is immediately accessible here if we write, first, the character '<', then immediately the link, then immediately the character '>'.

Without that, it's probably trivial to mark, copy and then access on some systems; but it's not on others.

Can we routinely make links 'clickable', please?

It's not hard to do.

Tony

I was hoping this trick (<>) would work when emailing someone...it doesn't. I know this is way off the subject, but would you know how to make a link "clickable" in an email?

The <> doesn't always work for some reason (and yes it was "perfect" like it says in the Help section). Sometimes I had to use [ url ] [ / url ] without the gaps(!) and that worked when <> didn't.

As far as email (Roxann's question), every email I know makes links clickable automatically.

Edit: I tried to write [ url ] [ / url ] without the gaps but I guess it just assumed it was a link of nothing so didn't write it. I just noticed it now.

For this group though, you have to add [*url] then whatever you are linking then [*/url] to end the link. (DO NOT ADD THE STAR, I just put a * to make it all visible)

It works then

Like the Help link indicates,
[ email ]charette@woodwind.org[ /email ] (without the spaces) results in charette@woodwind.org.

Somehow the '<' ... '>' parser gets confused by the marker '#' in the URL if one is in there. Also, it has to start with http:// or https:// .

In Firefox and Google Chrome at least, another option is to highlight the link in the post and then right-click on the highlighted link. This leads to a drop down menu that includes options for opening the link.

Best regards,

On a PC it's easy, yes, but I haven't found a way to do that on my iPad. For some reason it won't let me select and copy text on this board although I can on other web pages. Stupid bloody thing.

It just seems as though there are more than just a few "technical issues" that come up with the link business. I recall trying some years ago and not being at all successful in the endeavor. Maybe I'll try again.

I want to hear how somebody dictated a post through Siri, complete with a working link. Or perhaps you can tell what happened when you tried.

(My iPhone is too old for Siri so I have no experience with her/it. I suppose DW and I will get iPhone 6's after they arrive and the furor has subsided.)

My bad, I feel ;-)

Without wanting to put any pressure on Mark C., this is something that is in principle resolvable in the BBS itself. It's perfectly possible to parse the content of a post for text that validates as a URL or an email address, and for the post to be rendered as HTML with the appropriate tags. The whole [ url ] [ /url ] or < > stuff just makes parsing simpler, and it's a long time since I last used a BBS that required it (which may of course say more about me than the software:-)
