now that my clarinet problem has been sorted the next thing I need is a stand , might seem a daft question but as there are loads on the internet is there any to avoid makes or styles ? or any that people have found that are really good. I had a guitar stand once that was a pile of crap and wouldn't recommend to anyone , wasn't heavy enough and guitar kept falling over so I want to avoid anything like that with the clarinet.

Depends on just how secure you need it. If you play pit music and have various non-clarinet players bumping your stuff in and out of the pit, you NEED a Blayman. They are the heaviest and most secure.
If you just need something better than "on the bell," my favorite is the K&M trumpet/clarinet stand. They fold up and fit in the bell of your horn for easy transport in the case and are as good as any other 'standard' one peg style stand.

Yeah, pack-a-stand really put me off the idea for a long time.
The interim stand that I had some years ago was a heavy metal plate that could be slipped into your case cover (if you have one) with pegs that screw in to the plate, but sit in the bell for transport. I don't even recall who made those, or if they are still available. They were quite good, just slightly inconvenient.

I'd avoid the 'fits in the bell' types.
Get a 3 leg K & M, the type with metal legs. 15.99 from Musician's Friend.
I use a ProTec case with a side pocket - the stand fits in the side pocket.

If you haven't tried this particular one, it's worth looking into it. The legs are on a central spindle that screw onto the "peg." Once unscrewed, the legs fold together and fit INSIDE the "peg" (which is a hollow cone). Really ingenious and not detrimental to the bell at all during transport. Of course the legs are only so big, but as I'd said earlier it is as stable as most of these single instrument tripod style stands.

The 3-leg K+M's are great in almost all respects. The way the legs pack away and unpack quickly without fiddling with screws is neat. The tripod arrangement shows its advantage when you're playing on an uneven surface: old-fashioned models with 4 legs always end up rocking as they can't find a plane that goes through 4 points. But nothing is for free: in order to get stability, the 3 legs need to spread out further than with 4. So if you want a pair of stands for A/Bb playing, you need a lot of floor area.

Hercules makes nice stands. Legs swing together for transport and when you open it, they snap into place. As they have an interchangeable peg system, they're very versatile. Which one, specifically, were you thinking of?
More than one of my scores has "Not a sax" marked on it, somewhere.

I have both the hercules and the k&m. I prefer the k&m. the hercules has the habit of sticking in the bell when I lift the clarinet off of it the falling back on the ground. That is on my R13. I think it is because The little yellow plastic piece is on a spring and goes up into the bell past the tennon. Also the collapsable legs sometimes close a little causing the clarinet to angle a little like the leaning tower of pisa. It has never fallen but I am always afraid it might. It does fit in the bell and causes no problems there.
The reason I originally got it is because the k&m sticks out a little from the bell. I found if you modify the case just a little cut down between the bell and barrel you can keep the k&m in the case too. Let it pass through the bell and slightly into the barrel. That is on my buffet case.
That being said I like the k&m better although I have not yet bought another. I just use one for each clarinet.

David, did you know that on the Hercules stand the legs that fan out have, at the bottom of each a rubber section that you pull out and click into place. This will give the stand the balance it needs.

I vote for the Blayman. The slab of steel and thick pegs are heavy, but worth it.

@ Peter Cigleris haha you are right all this time I have had that Hercules stand I did not know that. I just gave each leg an extra yank and now they are locked in place. Well that solves one problem Thanks

My Hercules stand hung up also. I got in touch with the company and they offered to send me a revised stand that fixed the problem. Unfortunately, it was a gift, and I didn't have the receipt. But, there is a small opening that you can you can use an allen wrench to tighten down and lower the yellow plastic "ball". Then the stand won't hang up but will still support the clarinet.

@gwlively that worked. I found an allen wrench the right size. Actually one I use on my guitars, and unloosened the screw you described then i held the ball down and retightened the screw and now it only comes up about half what it did before and now does not hang like before. Thanks for the fix.
