Any thoughts on Rico plastic cover reeds? I tried one and really liked the way it sounded. What are your thoughts for this type of reed? Thank you

If they work for you, then keep using them. They're good for fast changes when doubling where natural cane reeds can dry out.
The problem I had with Plasticover bari sax reeds is they wouldn't lie flat against the table and leak at the base of the scrape so they'd be unresponsive or squeak all the time, but you shouldn't have that trouble with smaller reeds for clarinet.

I wonder whether these have improved along with the rest of the Rico line. After all, a plastic coated RSO is still just a RSO.

I was trying out a bunch of old reeds the other day. I have a few plasticover reeds. They were surprisingly good. Like many off brand reeds I suspect the softer reeds vibrate and sound pretty good but as you go to a harder strength the tone quality is problematic, so keep to the softer strengths.

I find that if one does a bit of extended playing at really loud dynamics on Plasticovers, the black plastic cover starts flaking and peeling off. I'm not too thrilled about the prospect of debris being blown down into my horn or possibly being unknowingly ingested by me, so I've long since quit using them.
If the plastic would just stay put, I'd use them for most outdoors gigs. We have an alto saxophonist in our ensemble that gets just one gig out of a Plasticover before the coating is destroyed.

Maybe the formula is different nowadays, but I had a Plasticover bari reed last me for four years constant playing. It started out as a 4 but ended up a 2.5 over that time.
