When you are subjecting a reed to long playing sessions and playing lots of high notes etc the reed tends to close up a bit with all this. Even though Mate does appear not to bite for high notes the reed could bend in a bit giving you a slightly smaller tip opening. The clarinet becomes a little "stuffy" due to this. Put a credit card in there and push down or bend it back a bit and it helps things. You can over do it but this isn't very productive.
