In the Youtube video search for
"carmen fantasy sarasate part 2"
At approx 1:42 in the video Mate Bekavac takes something out of his pocket and places it on the mouthpiece.
Any ideas?

It's called ADT4-5 (Automatic Double Tongue and 4th-5th registers). Nanotechnology device, rather expensive but well worth to buy

Well... THAT explains a lot.
I'm always the last one to the party, generally after it's over.

Was it pine tar?
Tongue in cheek
" Because of its texture, pine tar improves a clarinetist grip on the mouthpiece and prevents the mouthpiece from slipping out of the clarinetist mouth while playing. It also helps the clarinetist, because they do not have to grip the mouthpiece as hard and thus the clarinet person play more altissimo."

Credit card or similar shaped object to put between mouthpiece and reed to open it up a bit. This is a short term fix.

Why would you want to open it up a bit. This is a fix for what?

When you are subjecting a reed to long playing sessions and playing lots of high notes etc the reed tends to close up a bit with all this. Even though Mate does appear not to bite for high notes the reed could bend in a bit giving you a slightly smaller tip opening. The clarinet becomes a little "stuffy" due to this. Put a credit card in there and push down or bend it back a bit and it helps things. You can over do it but this isn't very productive.

If you put something between the reed and the MP's table you will need to seal the gap at the sides with your lips. This means inserting the entire beak into your mouth. I would like to see it before I believe it.

blimey.
I don't know what " 8-l " means, possibly that you're joking?
You don't leave the card there while you are playing.
