I have recently had a number of reeds warp, and am having to break in a new set.
I have sanded the backs of the warped reeds and they sound great again, but then many have warped again, one was beautiful when I started playing on it yesterday, but warped again in 5 minutes. I must have sanded the flat side (avoiding the last cm or so) a few times because it had become noticeably thinner. I am sanding on 600 grit paper, and only sand until the reed no longer rocks back and forth.
Just had a look, and these reeds have been played sort about 30 to 40 times, with an average playing time of 45 minutes or thereabouts.
Is this lower than I should expect? Or about right?

Check my website and read the pages about reeds. Especially on how to prevent warping and how to break them in and care for them. I haven't had a reed warp in over 35 years since I began doing what I wrote. My students have had the same success when they do what I do. It's easy.
