 Double Stands
Author: Filettofish

Hello BBoard. I just purchased a new/used A clarinet and to go with my Bb in preparation for my first role in an orchestra. As such, I will need a sturdy stand to hold both my instruments during rehearsal; is there any one stand that you trust with your instruments?

Get a Blayman stand.

BTW -I'm also on Long Island. What orchestra will you be playing in?

I know thee are heavier, sturdier stands available, but that also translates to more weight and bulk to carry in my equipment bag. I use two of the K&M fold-up stands - the three legs retract up alongside the cone that the clarinet sits on. I have occasionally had one go over, but I haven't had a clarinet damaged - the position of the splayed-out legs when the stand is in use slows any fall down a great deal.

Probably any stand can be pushed over if you (or someone else) hits the clarinet from the wrong direction, except maybe those heavy Blayman stands that have a solid base and are not, I don't think, foldable in any way.

I use the Hercules stands. They're a bit heavy but pretty well foolproof.

I've got a K&M that I keep in my practice room, but am looking for something more heavy duty. I'll give Blayman a shot, since I haven't seen much from Hercules that suits my needs. GBK I'm playing in the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra this coming season, the Suffolk Principal Orchestra.

I use the K&M stands, for the reasons Karl stated. Plus, they fit inside my double ProTec case.

Say hi to my good friend and colleague Phil Preddice who will be your conductor. We went to Crane together, a long, long time ago :)

I use the K&M stand as well. I've never had an issue with it falling over.
My teacher has a good double stand (actually it might be triple - for Bb, A, and Eb). I can ask her what kind it is. It's too bulky to fit in a case though.
Avoid the cheaper foldable plastic ones - I liked them initially because they can fit inside the clarinet bell for storage, but a.) they're not as heavy, so they're easier to knock over, and b.) the plastic pieces holding the legs in place can break (I had that happen twice), which makes the whole thing fall over.

Blayman, Valentino or Jeanne are all great. In fact, the bases and the pegs are interchangeable between the three stands.

I use the Jeanne stands and pegs for my oboes and clarinets, and the Valentino pegs for my flutes.

FWIW, I have a double Blaymann stand which I modified to hold my C and Eb clarinets as well. Four beasts on one stand for those occasional works that require them. Usually, however, it's just my Bb and A, but the Blaymann stand is sturdy and my clarinets are always safe.

For my Concerto and R13 clarinets, the Hercules stand does not work very well. While it does hold each clarinet securely, the knob at the top often becomes caught in the bore and when I pick the clarinet up, the stand remains attached--not fun for fast changes.

I also carry a K&M folding stand in my Bb bell which I use in wind ensemble gigs. Very easy to set up, secure and frees my hands to mark of switch music between numbers. Doesn't add much weight either.

So, for orchestra, I recommend the Blaymann, pegs may be unscrewed and removed for more convenient carry (I use a small canvas sports bag ) and for band, the K&M stand stored in the bell in your case. Works very well in my softside, lightweight double Yamaha clarinet case.

If it's a choice between weight and stability, I choose weight every time; I truck around two cast iron bases with pegs in a drawstring bag.

Two or three times people have brushed against my clarinets in a crowded pit. Had I been using lighter stands, they would have surely toppled over.

(I do use K&M stands sometimes because of the wide footprint, but only when the risks are low.)

Hands down I would say the Blayman stand. It is really solid and secure. I have seen the other stands get knocked over and once had the leg from a K and M break and my instrument almost toppled over.

I always carry the Blayman to gigs and feel that any issues with weight are well worth it because of the great protection they provide. It is better than the potential for damage and repairs to my instruments.

The Jeanne stands seem to be a knock off and may be a little cheaper. They also work well.

Another vote for Blayman. A bit on the heavy side, but worth it.

I like the Hercules stand, it's heavy enough to not tip over easily, but folds up and has a carrying bag.
