I have always liked The Clarinet- Excellence and Artistry by Rosario Mazzeo. There is a lot of great information in there.

http://www.dornpub.com/Mazzeo.html

The Bonade Clarinetist's Compendium is a good resource. It may be out of print, but you can find it at

A good, if pricey. book on the history of the clarinet is in the Yale Music Series, The Clarinet by Eric Hoeprich.

A worthwhile collection of articles on the clarinet and clarinet playing is The Cambridge Companion to the Clarinet published by Cambridge University Press.

The Keith Stein book is very sound, but dry. The Pino book, I found not very sound. I like the Companion to the Clarinet, which has been mentioned here. Of course, there is the classic book by Jack Brymer (is it still available?). There must be books in other languages that haven't been translated (in German?). In French, there are only a few little books.

For the history of the Oehler clarinet and the clarinet in Germany and Austria, there is a translation in English of Oskar Kroll's book, The "Clarinet with a Repetory," done in 1968 by Anthony Baines and Hilde Kroll. It's out of print but worth getting.

More reading material can be found (and purchased) on the Van Cott Information Services, Inc. website, all devoted the the clarinet and clarinet playing:

How about Tom Ridenour's book "The Educator's Guide To The Clarinet" found here: http://www.ridenourclarinetproducts.com/EducatorsGuide.html

Also, IMO, for an extensive education about mouthpieces, I would highly recommend reading two articles by Brad Behn:

http://www.clarinetmouthpiece.com/nomenclature/

and

http://www.clarinetmouthpiece.com/selecting-a-mouthpiece/

Norman: I didn't realise M. Ferron's book had been translated into English. It's a small book, but a gold-mine of information. We dip into it all of the time; occasionally, we disagree with him. M. Ferron came up with quite a few inventions, none of which was followed up upon. It's a great pity.

The McGill book is pure "New Age", which is not a compliment for me. What about your book, Mr. Pay? We are eagerly awaiting it.

Don't know about 'New Age'. In my view the book attempts to apply a particular, anachronistic approach to ALL music; in my view, unsuccessfully.

>> What about your book, Mr. Pay? We are eagerly awaiting it.>>

Why? It would be far too tiring an endeavour.

The answer to his so-called arguments lives rather in the accumulatingly better performances of the music he talks about.

Many of those performances have already been presented – for those with ears to hear.

But if you want to talk about ME, then I've written some things, some of which you can find here, either in archives or available using SEARCH.

So, was there anything in particular you wanted to ask...?

A wikipedia article states that Mr. Pay is working on a book concerned with the use of "metaphor in teaching and learnng to play the clarinet." Is that not correct?

One of Mr. Pay's essays on the mechanics of clarinet performance also appears in the forementioned Cambridge Companion to the Clarinet.

Yeah, it's true...I WAS.

Several publishers presented with drafts then told me that 'musicians just don't read books'.

"But, if you incorporated what you want to say in a tutor that teachers around the world could recommend their pupils to buy, then we'd have sales. Otherwise, it's a no-go."

I wasn't really writing for beginners. So I started writing here.

Now, my experience leads me to suppose that the publishers were right, by and large. I find myself pretty much the only one who wants to point out the rubbishy nature of some of the rubbish that some people write here.

The other experts – like Liquorice, say – just don't want to get involved, it seems.

So _I_ get to be the bad guy – the one who 'takes against' people like Roger Garrett, Ken Shaw...and so on.

So it goes.

WAAAAH Mommy. He's TROLLING me.
Tony -
Congratulations from a minor troll to the mother of all trolls. Nobody does it like you.

Ken Shaw

By the way, my favorite books are:

Bains, Woodwind Instruments and Their History http://www.amazon.com/Woodwind-Instruments-Their-History-Dover/dp/0486268853/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1408320958&sr=1-1&keywords=woodwind+instruments. I think it's the best way to learn about the evolution of the clarinet, and the material on the other woodwinds is great cross-fertilization

Adam Carse, Musical Wind Instruments (dry but comprehensive)

Robert Willimann, The Clarinet and Clarinet Playing (long out of print -- full of war stories and practical advice)

Jack Brymer, From Where I Sit and In the Orchestra (his two autobiographies -- great practical advice)

Pamela Watson, Great Clarinetists of the Past and More Great Clarinetists of the Past (expensive but worthwhile -- there's also a recent supplement, and another volume, Great Clarientists of the Present, is out of print but worth finding)

Al Rice - The Baroque Clarinet (available in paperback) and The Classical Clarinet (new, and expensive in hard cover) (comprehensive and well-written books by the man who knows more than everybody)

Grove article on Clarinet.

See Gary van Cott's site for more.

Ken Shaw

Evidently what the publishers wanted Tony Pay to assemble was a method book along the lines of the three vol. "Clarinet Fundamentals" by Reiner Wehle. which is international enough to appeal to players of both Boehm and Oehler instruments and aims to instruct particularily beginning, intermediate, and advanced intermediate students, whereas Mr. Pay had something very different in mind.

But this is the age of self-publishing. In the U.S. Thomas Ridenour, so far as I know, publishes his popular and informative contributions to clarinet playing himself--"The Educator's Guide to the Clarinet" and "Clarinet Fingerings: A Guide for the Performer." Though self-published they still wind up listed and available on Amazon.com and from Gary van Cott as well as directly from Tom Ridenour on his own website.

Selling a self-published book on the value of metaphor in music and clarinet pedagogy and performance should not prove all that difficult. A few ads in The Clarinet magazine and an occasional recommendation on this board would be all that is needed to reach the intended segment of the market. Why entrust to a distant, profit-motivated publisher a project that can easily and best be done independently?

I find that it is also worthwhile to read books about/for other instruments. There is a 19th century treatise for singing--Manuel Garcia- that is the singer's bible, for example. I like Joseph Szigeti's book on the violin and have learned a lot from it.

Self publishing is an excellent option for books that have limited potential appeal........such as books related to clarinets.

I can imagine a publishing house not wanting to publish a book on the clarinet, it's just a very small market.

Michele Gingras has some great ideas in her Clarinet Secrets and More Clarinet Secrets. Many of them are presented (free) on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/clarinet-secrets/id262672700?mt=2

Ruben mentioned that David Pino's The Clarinet and Clarinet Playing "isn't very sound." I can understand why he says that. The book is interesting, but parts of it just aren't all that helpful. Having said this, Pino has a wonderful chapter about teaching other clarinetists and an interesting section about his personal method of double tonguing.
