Yamaha C100-A (is there such a thing?)
Author: Orinoco

Hi people,

I have just come across a local ad for someone selling a "Yamaha C100-A" who informs me that this is an A clarinet (and not a Bb clarinet). However, I went onto the yamaha (USA) site and looked at the A clarinets they have there and I cannot see a C100.

http://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical-instruments/winds/clarinets/a-clarinets/#list=within&mode=paging

Is this for real?

Does anyone know much about this?

If it is for real, I'd be keen to get it - I have an old Beuscher Bb clarinet that is serving me well (with Yamaha 4C mouthpiece), but am looking for a step-up instrument now - an A clarinet would be good for when the guitarists want to play in A or E.

Thanks in advance!

The C100 is (or was) Yamaha's student clarinet. There was never a model in A. That seller clearly has no idea what he has.

Unfortunately A clarinets are few and far between so finding one at a good price is very hard. Keep looking around, I'm sure you'll eventually find something that suits you.

The easiest way to check is by the length of the assembled instrument. The A clarinet is a bit longer. I find I can play along with most guitar pieces by using a C clarinet.

Thanks for your knowledge and ideas guys. I am at work and forgot to pack my own clarinet (was going to compare) but I think I can borrow a tuning fork to at least check if it is a Bb (likely).

That actually looks like it could be an A clarinet... The space between the 1st and 2nd tone holes on the lower joint looks like it might be further apart, as it usually is on A clarinets. I could be wrong about that though.
Edit: Comparing it with my A and Bb clarinets, it actually looks more like a Bb.

to be fair, it DOES say "C-100 A" on the box... but it looks like a B flat clarinet to me... only one way to find out. dn

It's essentially the same clarinet as a YCL-26II which is only available in Bb.

It would be nice if they did offer a plastic A clarinet though, but that's not ever likely. That would mean more bands would be able to play more music in the proper original orchestral keys if there were affordable good quality A clarinets instead of most arrangements being shunted up a semitone into some ridiculous flat key to the annoyance of oboe/cor and flute/piccolo players!

I'd ask the seller to take a new photo (in focus) with a ruller next to the instrument, if a Bb is not available for comparison.

I went to check it out.

It's a Bb Clarinet

The search continues! :D
