Attachment: Donizetti Measure 60.jpg (532k)
Hi everybody, I own a copy of the Donizetti Concertino in Bb Major edited and reconstructed by Raymond Meylan.
In the first set of triplets in measure 60, there is a printed Bb in the part and in the piano reduction. Is it supposed to be played as a C on the clarinet? If it is played as written Bb, it does not match the underlying harmony (root and 3rd of sounding Eb major chord). I have attached a photo of the said measure with this post.
I have heard recordings where the soloists played either written Bb or C. Please advise.
Sean
Edit: Please excuse my double posting below in the main page, I did not notice it has been posted once.

I'm not familiar with the piece, but I'm assuming that it's in B-flat major. Looking at the clarinet part, I'm assuming that it's a transposed part in C major.
The E-flat and G in the piano part don't automatically mean that it's an E-flat major chord, because without the fifth or any other chord tones, we don't know for sure. Even so, I'm guessing that Donizetti intended it to be an E-flat chord (or F major chord for the clarinet) since most of the notes in the clarinet part suggest this chord.
I would play the note as a B-flat, and think of it as a nonharmonic tone, something that is very common. I think the correct term for this type of nonharmonic tone is an anticipation.

I'm with Blumberg. I do the same thing.
Never trust a music publisher, even if the plates are a gazillion years old. They almost never fix errors.
If a note just sounds awful, especially if it's a half step from what would sound "good," I just assume it's a printing or editing error and change it. I have yet to get a visit from the clarinet police or be haunted by a dead composer (who also could have been careless).
