 buffet e11 clarinet thumb rest

I bought a new buffet e11 B-flat clarinet about 6 months ago as they were discontinuing that model. Serial 117216. I understand that model had an adjustable thumb rest. Mine does not. Any thoughts about what is going on?

Count yourself lucky. The oversized adjustable thumb rest breaks easily and is not worth the hassle.

Check that serial number - that is an unusual # for an E11. Most Buffets in that range are early 1970's R13's. 7 digits maybe?

In any event, as stated, a good thing. E11 adjustable thumb rests are a disaster, weak, they break constantly.

These guys are right, I played without a thumb rest for almost 8 months. Be thankful. It may be that somebody replaced the thumb rest because I have not seen any E11's without an adjustable thumb rest.

The screw holes for both fixed and adjustable thumbrests are in exactly the same position, so if you do choose to fit the more reliable fixed one, then you should be able to do that with no problem.

I was going to suggest it had already been replaced, except for the comment that the instrument was new. You can buy replacements - wwbw used to carry them. I keep a supply handy, especially now that marching band has started. I"ll probably go through a few this week.

I think I bought a new clarinet. But with the odd serial number and fixed thumb rest I am having my droughts. The price for a new e-11 in around $1500 I bought it for $1000. I thought that was because it was the end of that model.

Do you think it's possible that you bought a counterfeit? There are plenty of counterfeit buffets floating around, most of them being low-quality Chinese clarinets. The best way to tell is to compare the markings to a true buffet clarinet.

Btw your serial number is quite low. The most recent e11 I've seen was made in 2009 and had a serial number of 990***. That would put your clarinet around 10 years earlier than that. It could either be a very old model or a counterfeit with a fake serial number.

Either you bought a counterfeit or somebody ripped you off because no way a '70s e11 cost $1000. Should be more like $500. If I may ask, who was the seller?
